Description
That new ship I’ve been talking about is done! Meet USS Hornet (CV-8), the youngest of the Yorktown-class sisters! Yorkie and Enterprinter will follow sometime soon - but only after I’ve finished Leviathan.

A few notes:
-The colors of her clothes are based on those of the European hornet (Vespa crabro). Despite its name, this insect is the only true hornet found in North America, having been introduced by Europeans.
-I gave her black hair in part to match her hornet theme and in part to fit with Yorktown and Enterprise, who have white and gray hair respectively. The parts that stick up are meant to resemble a wasp’s antennae; although European hornets specifically don’t have antennae shaped like that, the appearance is more striking this way and it fits more closely with what the average person might associate with a wasp.
-She and her sisters have “ghost planes” - planes that start out incorporeal and become solid once they’re fully summoned - which they summon and direct using a set of hand motions combined with a sort of mental communication ability that makes the planes automatically do what the ships want. Here, Hornet is summoning a squadron of TBD Devastators (so chosen because she historically carried them and also I like them a lot) with her right hand and simultaneously recalling/un-summoning a pair of B-25 Mitchell bombers with her left. I’ll make a chart describing the Yorktown-class hand signals soon.
-The shape of her skirt is inspired by the Pokemon Vespiquen! This was originally my sister’s idea if I remember correctly. Underneath is a sort of stiff honeycomb-shaped petticoat to give the skirt its shape.
-You might notice that only one of the planes - the Devastator closest to the left-hand corner - has any shading. This is because none of the others are solid yet, and thus the light still goes through them instead of treating them as obstructions.
-The title for this one is from My Happy Ending by Avril Lavigne!
Update 12/23/23: Modified her facial expression and gave her eyes thicker outlines to make her look more youthful. Improved some shading. Added more volume to her hair.
