Description
Because I am sick and tired of looking around and seeing people comparing the plights of Haiti, Chile, and Japan to each other. It makes me feel dirty to see people doing that and quite frankly only worsens my weak faith in humanity. Are we honestly going to look at each other and determine that we only cared about something if it happened in a particular area or that we should have cared because this amount of people perished?? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!
I think we're forgetting something important--oh what was it... Oh, yeah! PEOPLE ARE DEAD! That alone should make us care and the fact that people are nitpicking each other and these disasters is disgusting to me.

Earthquakes are part of our world, and they happen all the time. People forget previous earthquakes when new ones happen. It seems like the Indian Ocean one in 2004 is water under the bridge now. The earthquake that my family remembers best is long forgotten - many of my mom's relatives survived the Messina earthquake in 1908. I'm saying this because once another big earthquake happens, people will forget about past earthquakes. My family has not forgotten the Sicilian one (in fact, it was during the earthquake when my maternal grandma's mom was born), and neither have many other Sicilian families, but most of the world has because only a few people who experienced it are still alive. A century from now, Americans won't talk much about the earthquakes in Haiti and Japan. (And by then, there would have been a few more major earthquakes in those areas.)

I agree, everyone suffered, my family is from Chile and it disturbs me when people compare the natural disasters....

It's disturbing that people feel the need to downplay or ignore one disaster and hype up another, while accusing everyone else of not caring enough. Haiti, Chile, Japan, and more recently, Turkey ALL suffered from terrible disasters! They all had different factors and circumstances that contributed to each one, and there were a number of reasons why some countries received more publicity than others, but that doesn't make any one of them any less tragic. A natural disaster is a natural disaster, no matter who or where it strikes.

I hate the religious fanatics that only want to help "Christian nations". Some even said Japan got what they deserved for rejecting Jesus Christ. Religion doesn't matter when things are going bad in different nations.

They probably wouldn't help Haiti or Chile because those two countries are Catholic instead of Protestant.

Catholicism is Christianity, isn't it? Don't they worship Jesus as well?

We can care all we want, but that doesn't change that bigger disasters should have first priority for aid. If I were from Chile or Haiti or NZ, I'd be pretty upset that, in my time of need, how much people cared depended on what trendy products the country has. Even Japan government representatives are telling us that they need far less aid than other Pacific Islands hit by the same earthquake and tsunami. But we don't care about them. We care about Japan.

I can accept comparisons from as part of an analysis, but other than that I'm not very fond of it. The most infamous cases I know of are comparing every tragedy out there with 9/11.
