This is great, but I have one question, if you're not too busy. I have a lot of trouble getting the length of the face correct. Is there a technique for this or is it simply trial and error?
Thanks
Amy.

That's a tough one. essentially the eye-line splits the face in 2 even parts (in most cases.) I always start with a complete circle and add a little bit at the bottom so that its shaped like an egg. That sets the stage for the rest of the body..proportion wise.

okay, yeah thats a good method if you're creating your own character, but I like to do portraits from photos and find it hard to match just the length of the face..

OOOooh, I understand. Well the secret then is to find common relationships. Its hard to explain in words what I mean. You have to say look at the eye, then take one of its edges and draw a line from that edge to say...the edge of the nose or the lips. Now you know at what angle and how much distance the EYE should be from the NOSE, LIPS, etc. That's what I do to maintain proportion.
