Description This summer, I had the opportunity to participate in Gettysburg's Sesquicentennial. It was a grand adventure that drew in many people, both from across the country and from abroad. I drafted a couple of drawings depicting moments in this battle that turned the course of the Civil War, and shaped the future of the United States.

A true American patriot and hero forgotten by his people. It's so criminal that I seethe with rage!

Glad to come across another person who was involved in the Gettysburg sesquicentennial on DA!  Were you with the living history folks on the battlefield?

Indeed, I was. For a couple days I took part as a Confederate reeanctor. It was an incredible event I wouldn't have missed for anything. It was also special to see many people appreciate it as well, including foreigners who took my photo. How were you involved?

Excellent!  Yes, the visitor-ship was a fine thing to see.  I've worked in historical interpretation in a number of contexts, and it's always interesting to wonder how many photo albums one is in -- how many unknown families' memories include  a snapshot of oneself!

I was with the U.S. infantry, National Regiment (my personal sub-unit is the 1st Maryland Infantry).  We were mostly engaged in firing demonstrations near the Pennsylvania Monument, but did march to man the stone wall during the Pickett's Charge commemoration.  I hope you got to participate in that -- which must have been awesome in its way -- but it was also very awe-inspiring to stand at the wall and watch it all unfold.

Watching that many people re-create the advance on the actual ground was an irreplaceable experience, and even taught me more about the terrain than I had ever known before.  Specifically, that one reason Armistead's command might have been in better shape upon reaching the Emmitsburg Road (beyond the fact that they were in the rear) seemed to me that they were actually protected by a swale of ground for much of their advance, which was not the case for all the advancing troops.

And the rain miraculously cleared up just in time for the charge commemoration -- providential

In a way I was sad not to also participate in one of the battle reenactments which occurred, but one can only take so much time away from work and family.  But there was nothing like being on the real battlefield on the exact anniversary!

You said it! Thanks for writing about your experiences and what you saw. Yes, visiting the park gives a whole new appreciation for the terrain, and I was glad that land was provided by private owners to accommodate the spectacle. Most of my experiences were limited to initial events of the Gettysburg, but I was glad for what I was able to get, and that family members could also see it with me. Thanks again for sharing.

Glad to hear it, and thanks again for posting your artwork!  Too often General Meade is factored out of remembrances of the battle.
