Description It was suggested by a friend on DeviantArt that I draft something inspired by the Disney adaption of Lloyd Alexander’s ‘The Black Cauldron.’ I admit that I am not a huge fan of Disney’s 25th animated feature, but I appreciate that it has a growing cult following, and I recognize some of the strong features of the film: superb animation, detailed backgrounds in the widescreen format, and a convincing sense of atmosphere. A pet peeve that I have with the main character, Taran, was that — while he may possess a mellifluous English voice — he tends to be more talk than action. Here is a conceptual design on how the characters in the story could have acted in certain situations.

Yeah, Taran was less of an warrior-type hero and more of a leader-type hero.  That feeling of him being kind of pathetic is what led me to name my D&D character, off of whom I based all of my own work, after him; I wanted to make a Taran that wasn't quite so lame.  He became a bit cooler in the later books, but at the time I had only read the Book of Three.

Oooh, neat!  If the movie had had a scene like this, it would have been perfect!

...Actually, there were some pretty badass moments in the books.  Or at least moments that could be imagined looking badass.  The bard got a giant war-cat, Gurgi got a cloak and bow...Taran did some pretty neat stuff in the later books.  There was an Aragorn-type character.... Would have been neat to see some of that animated.

As Frank and Ollie wrote in their book on animation, The Disney Villain, it was heartbreaking to see such great material wasted in reference to the story source.

Great adaption! I should pick up the book as I wasn't entirely impressed with the film.

There actually was a scene cut from the movie where Taran used the sword to slay some of the henchmen when he, Eilonwy and Fflewdurr first escaped the castle.

Thanks for the comment. Yes, indeed, there was a lot cut from the film.

It's a shame too. If they hadn't cut the scene, Taran probably wouldn't have been criticized as much for being "all talk."

That's true. There was much golden material that was excluded.
