Recently I saw “The Legend of Tarzan,” a good B-movie with fine casting and entertaining spectacle. I dare say it would make Edgar Rice Burroughs, as well as Joseph Conrad, pleased. Being a sort of adventurous tumbleweed who took up various vocations in numerous locations, Burroughs himself worked on a ranch in the county where I grew up in Idaho, and served as a policeman not far from where I now live in Utah. It wasn’t until his thirties that he discovered his gainful calling as a novelist and cultivated a long career thanks to a fertile imagination and strong work ethic. Most of his writings stand the test of time, and having read "Tarzan of the Apes" (1912) several years ago I was surprised by how well he narrated action and impressed by how well he described atmosphere. Hopefully in the future more of his work can be reintroduced to other generations.
