Description As much as I love Sephiroth, I think it's unfair that he's getting all the gifts and no real drawbacks from the Jenova cells. It would be interesting to see some balance, a price to pay for him being harder, better, faster, stronger. Very much like Chaos, that takes his toll on the host, Jenova cannot be all harmless to her human child, right? While the explanation that His will is stronger than Hers makes some sense, I refuse to believe that the parasytic matter that travels the space and kills entire advanced civilisations like Ancients, can be subdued by a child.

I enjoy imagining that every once in a while, when his life is in danger, or he's pushed too far out of his comfort zone, Sephiroth loses the grip on the violent force inside him.

Sephiroth is in his early teens here, because there's no better time in life to discover some fundamental problems that cannot be solved.

Progress

A special thanks to lucife56 for the kind suggestions. I'm still not comfortable enough with extreme lighting, but you help me progress <3

I like your idea of the balance.  I've been thinking of writing a fanfiction about that myself when I'm finally caught up on editing the one at hand lol.  The "stronger will" thing makes some sense in terms of it (Jenova, I refuse to call it a "she."  It's an eldritch abomination, alien horror in my eyes) corrupts your mind/will to do what it wants, which is drain the life energy of planets for its own survival, but it just never made sense to me that it was all Sephiroth's doing, you know?  He might have been aloof, but he didn't have any megalomaniac tendencies until he came across Jenova in Nibelheim, and since he only had Hojo's lies about who his real mother was, he didn't have much of a shield against its parasitic influence.  There'd be no Sephiroth without Jenova, at least not the way he is.  His story is so tragic to me.  He never had a chance at a normal life.

Needless to say this picture is stunning.  I love how you've done the eyes!

Thank you for the thoughtful comment!

Some aspects of the "stronger will" do make sense, but I find it strange that Sephiroth, once a war hero and the General of ShinRa's massive army, concerned about the well-being of his men, a kind friend and a trusted ally, upon learning about Jenova, suddenly wants "to sail the darkness of the cosmos" just like she/it did, and no, Jenova is not manipulating Sephiroth, in fact, it's the opposite. The explanation feels rather forced, if you ask me.

I wanted his eyes to look like liquefied nightmares

Exactly, it doesn't make a lot of sense and is incongruent. Someone's personality doesn't change like that without a catalyst, and whenever you throw mental manipulation into the mix, everything becomes suspect. I wrote a defense of him a few years ago, because it always bothered me. He seems like another victim of both the Shinra's use, his father's manipulations, and an alien influence. There's a Golbez comparison in this, as well.

I see the "stronger will" more as since he was at least partially human or rather sentient, and it was more catatonic, it used him for his will to do what it needed. One of the things I love about VII is how open for interpretation it is. What really happened is something up for debate, and that's a good thing.

Thanks so much for not dismissing my response outright! A lot of people just take VII at face value, and there's so much more under the surface.

I think, my dear, you have more than succeeded!

Ah yes, it's fascinating that characters and story of FF7 allows different interpretations, so people can relate to certain aspects, find something they like, and something they hate.

As for Sephiroth, I see two versions of him in the story: pre-insanity and post-insanity. The picture above was my humble attempt to combine the two. It's still him, but instead of being inhumanly proper, unhealthily disciplined, work oriented person who barely shows any sign of emotions, in this version, he's more susceptible to losing control.

It makes sense that a person who shuts down emotions completely eventually breaks. This scenario allows occasional outbursts of anger, displays of insecurity, discontent, sadness. From his POV, it's a flaw, but it protects Sephiroth from his own perfectionism, in a way.  I'm probably thinking too much about this.

Oh, and thank you SO, SO much <3

Oh no carry on!  I've over-analyzed Sephiroth for half my life and will continue to do so without any compunction.  Everything you said makes complete sense.  It's like at moment of contact with Jenova there was a schism, and the two halves of himself, the aloof, controlled SOLDIER general he'd been forced to be and the awakened, chaotic alien cells that he didn't know about until that moment, and they called to him, confirming the lie his d*ckhead father had told him.  What I love about VII is the "what ifs"

Of course!
