Description A good friend and mentor.

Inspired by Al Hirschfeld. It's fun exploring this style.
It's also incredible how long it can take to make something so simple.

Sketched in Painter IX, line art in Illustrator.
26 hours. Completed 2 days ago :)

I was glad to see him smile.

I like it a lot!

I was just messing with vectors yesterday (my results came out sort of caricaturish, too, though it wasn’t my direct intent), and thinking about how long it can take just to put together a single line. It’s crazy. It’s worth it, though. I think I have a long way to go before my vector lines start looking as smooth and seamless as yours do, though!

I seriously think that vectors is one of the most challenging forms of digital art, because it's rather difficult to express heavy emotion, as opposed to digital painting. Vectors are usually used for pop-art and whatnot, and somehow, because of the way they're structured, they usually lack a certain depth. At least that's how I think. Which is why, time-consuming as they may be, I love the challenge in using vectors to express the same level of depth and emotion as that of a digital painting.

God my English sucks today. I'm so Asian.

That makes sense. And it also gives an interesting perspective on vector art.

This is sorta unrelated, but what you wrote reminds me of something I was thinking a lot about during my first year of art college . . . comedy is very important to me, and I definitely want to do something someday involving both comedy and art, but what exact creative mediums I want to do this through are still unclear to me. All I know is that aside from children’s illustration (it’s been a dream of mine since I was in my early teens to one day illustrate and possibly even write a children’s book or a series of children’s books, lmao I’m lame), I’m kind of interested in finding a way to be comedic/humorous in a format that isn’t typically looked at for expressing comedy. Like, lots of people who enjoy absorbing themselves in and attempting to create humor will go for things like animation or comic design, but things like that don’t really appeal to me. I like looking at them, I mean; I just don’t feel a drive to learn how to do those types of things myself, at least not in this moment of time. I want to attempt to find (possibly even make my own) format for that sort of thing.

I really started thinking about that when, in one of my school’s galleries during the year, there was a statue made by a student that was a classical sculpture of a man’s head, while on his shoulder was a bright and colorful little Pixar character (which specific one eludes me at the moment). I thought that was awesome, haha. And it was much more entertaining to look at than many other things in that room. I don’t know; when some of my serious art studies were hung up in one of my school’s galleries, I felt sort of weird about it, because they didn’t have so much an element of humor in them, and if people I don’t know are going to be looking at/possibly analyzing stuff I’ve made, I’d rather amuse them than attempt to convey anything profound. Not that there’s anything wrong with intellectually in-depth works. Just that, being that I’m sort of not very serious-feeling a lot, it’s not what I usually feel comfortable trying to do, if that makes any sense.

Wow I’m rambling a lot. My english is probably worse, and I’m a native speaker of the language. *cracks open a bottle of stfu*

Well first of all, English is my mother tongue I just like to crack jokes. At myself

Anyway, back to you. It's awesome and completely not lame for you to want to illustrate and write children's books. Hell, it's what I want to do, too, at some point in my life (but I'm interested in a lot of things to do with illustration and design). In regard to the "humour" aspect, though, in my opinion, it's best to just... experiment, experiment, experiment. Try not to look for it so hard. These things always "come" naturally, but not in the sense that you sit on your ass and just wait for the big moment to fly by or some lame shit like that. Know what I mean? :) It's like conciously looking at the hands of a clock to literally watch the time pass. Wow how completely irrelevant ... I've always been bad with examples and whatsmecalls... that word that I think begins with a "C"... or something, or is it an "A"... it's pretty much the equivalent of "examples", except in a more... different... way.

Fuck.

What the hell has happened to my vocabulary.

But you get the idea :) I hope. EXPERIMENT! instead of conciously looking for the style you want. Get your feet wet in all areas! Just like Picasso And soon you'd develop something that's entirely your own.

Hey, it's awesome for ANYONE to take on Vectors. Illustrator is a really complex program for most... though I caught on really quickly for some reason. I guess it was luck :)

Looking to see some new vectors from you!
