Specimen UB-01 was brought into the facility for the first time. It was a long night for all of us trying to get her settled but she seems to have taken to her new tank quite well. We all feared for her well being during transportation but medical reports have shown she has taken no damage. We’ve decided to celebrate today as her birthday as the first day of her under our care.

She doesn't remember anything before now. Darkness, movement, dull sounds reverberating through the water. Water. She remembers water. A tank. How long had she been in here? She didn't know. It felt like a long time of darkness and then suddenly: light. Faces. Creatures she didn't recognize. They were looking at her, they were smiling.

They were speaking to her through the glass. She didn't understand their language but she could tell the words directed towards her were different. They were in a softer tone. They were telling her "Happy Birthday." She wanted to say something back.

Many still doubt UB-01 has the capabilities for conscious thought. We here at the lab know better. We've seen her try to communicate with us. She waved at us today! Perhaps she is just mimicking our movement but such mimicry must lead to the conclusion that she at least enough thought to copy us, does it not? They want us to run more tests on her. They're tired of our passive observation. We're going to move into the tests soon. I just hope she survives them. We don't have any other specimen like her and it'd be a shame to lose her so early.

It had been a month in the tank. She still doesn't know what she's doing here or what they people watching her want but they still talk to her with the soft voices. They wave at her with thee things they use to hold objects. They make many motions with these things at her but waving is the most common. One day she realized she could wave back. It was a simple motion, the shorter inner tentacle on her left side lifted and waved from side to side. The people watching her liked that. Their smiled came back, even bigger this time and they seemed... excited? She felt... happy.

The tests have shown us things we could've never imaged. She posses powers like nothing we've ever seen. The higher ups have begun calling her Parasite. She seems to be able to latch onto test subjects and control their every movements. She must be forcibly removed from the test subjects in order to free them. Her grip is incredible. She seems more hesitant to latch onto subjects the more tests we put her through yet we've seen no outright resistance just yet. We think it may be in her nature to latch onto things. Could this be the start of a refusal of her role in life?

She remembers the tests. She wishes she didn't. The tests aren't fun. The other creatures she's put with are afraid of her. She doesn't want to hurt them. Is she hurting them? She doesn't know. Sometimes she wish she knew. Usually she knows it's better that the answer is left unanswered.

This morning was the first time she refused to interact with a test subject. We tried multiple subjects, even ones she has previously paired off with, and found that she refused to near them. She stayed in the corner of the room the entire time, facing away from us. We brought her to her tank and she still refused to look at us. I think we've upset her. Have we been putting her under too much stress with the tests? I never wanted to do this to her but we have to for the research. She's going to be put through another medical exam to see if she's sick, the odd behavior could just be from an illness after all.

She feels sad. Empty. She doesn't want to do these tests anymore. She won't hurt anyone anymore. She won't do anything anymore. She doesn't wave back when the men who bring her to the tests. She just stares at the wall. Sometimes she sleeps.

If she dreams, she doesn't remember any of them.

The tests have finally been cancelled. She's refused to do anything for months and we know her vitals are stable. Today I tried to get on her good side by slipping her a few beans. We usually don't feed the specimens anything other than their required nutrients but she seems so sad. Besides, the experiments are over-- there's no variable I need to worry about anymore. For now we go back to observing her. Perhaps if this lightens her mood we might be able to document it properly.

She received a bean. One of the men gave it to her. She was unsure of what to do with it but he seemed to be bringing the one in his hand to his mouth. Oh. This was to be eaten? She understood that. The bean was... sweet. She had never tasted anything with flavor before. She liked this. He had given her this...? Maybe... he wasn't so bad. The other may have been but this one was good.

She turned to face him and waved.

The other test subjects have grown too dangerous. A mass order was sent out to kill all still living specimen. If not terminated by the end of the year by us the higher ups will come and do it themselves. I can't kill her. No one here can. So we're letting her go. We may all be terminated for this act of... mutiny but if it ensures her safety I'm willing to take that risk. We waited until today to do it. We wanted to spend exactly one year with her. We're giving her the gift of freedom from this organization.
