Kubo has only his mother to turn to when it comes to family and they depend on each other mutually. Even at hard times with knowing that his grandfather and aunts were evil, he looked toward his mother as a form of warmth and comfort.

For myself, I had a lot of people who I thought were close to me: friends, families, coworkers. Most of the time it's very one sided in where I bend over backwards in order to keep my relations with those I felt were close to me. In the end, I grew tired of being the only one who cared and when I stopped caring, no one seemed to notice, which spoke volumes of just how unimportant I was to them. I overcame this in the way I thought was better for both parties: I cut ties with them. Instead, I reach toward people who do matter to me without looking back. I wanted to represent this with the chain breaking away from Kubo as he falls from a dark area into a warm lake where his mother was waiting for him with open arms.

Kubo is a beautiful film and I'm so happy it exists! Thank you Laika, for this wonderful movie. ~
