Description
This is a picture I drew of a platypus. They're egg laying mammals that can be found in Australia and New Guinea. They're in the group called monotreme, along with the egg laying echidnas.

From about two years of age, the male and female platypuses mate, and two or three eggs develop within the female. After a month, the female will lay the eggs, which are soft like reptiles' eggs. She will incubate the eggs for ten days before they hatch. She'll feed the young with milk secreted from patches on her skin rather than nipples, as both platypuses and echidnas don't suckle like other mammals.

The platypus is the only mammal that has venom. Males develop this venom during the mating season.
The venom can kill smaller animals and has been known to kill dogs in some cases. In humans, it's not life threatening, but it can cause extreme pain and swelling that can last for weeks depending on dose.

They have a lifespan of seventeen years.

When first discovered back in the Georgian period, many thought that it was a chimeric hoax. With a duck's bill attached to the body of what looked like a kind of beaver.
