Description Spur of the moment.  My ink over the late and great Joe Kubert's dry media (pencil, charcoal, can't tell what it is).  Should take me a while.  Check JK's original and you'll see why. LOL fav.me/d5vlzje
This makes what, 35 posts?  And it's only Inktober 22nd.  And I was afraid of getting inked out.  Haha.

Working it sporadically when time permits. 30 min sessions.

First pass complete.  Now, to clean it up and tweak this and that.  A few passages need it. The impressions are legible, if rough.  I think this piece with its many figures lit directly and to varied degrees shaded provides excellent practice for the basics - which includes learning to make those ink lines and spots suggest form with the absolute minimum.  Things I studied - light zones (high value with thin lines) v.s. shade zones (low value with thick lines), depth by contrast (thin line next to thick line or spot suggests a turning edge, or an edge casting shadow, respectively), lost edges (where light breaks the outline), and the importance of quality reference and analysis for knowing what goes into the details of a thing.  It's like JK is deliberately teaching how to do it.  XD

beautifully set out ! the tonal scheme, separating light from dark is prominent in this piece of artwork. the advice you give is evident. Amazing indeed.

Well, I'm always happy when I get a compliment, but on these Inktober pieces all I did was copy (and less than faithfully in some cases). Here I would give JK the credit and for myself take blame for mucking with it.
Still, I'm glad you commented so we can share the wonder of the power of the tonal scheme.  It is the primary cue for reading composition and so strong in its global influence that even if the drawing is badly executed one's initial impression will be good (if the tonal scheme "works" as it should).

(to clarify - I don't think mine is badly executed, just wanting in several instances that haunt me.)

oh whether it's copied or from your thought process, it doesn't matter, if you placed ink\pencils to paper and created that copy that pinpoints key factors on tonal schemes\border separation\light\dark..etc..etc...then to me i can analyze that artwork and look at my own flaws so much more clearly and besides, this piece is worthy of a compliment. and JK, another great !

JK one of my favorites.  Not only a great artist and storyteller, he was both intellectual and practical; above all he was a decent human being and a friendly man. I say "man" because so many of them, even the great ones, just never mature.

Thank you! TJ.  This is the first Inktober that I really got into.  Best ever!
