Description
Another installment of my super-terriffic tutorial series, Don't Drink When You Draw! For this I had to go all the way back to the Renaissance to rip off Leonardo Davinci who used this device to construct the head in profile and check its proportions. You will see this used in various ways in most HTD Manga and comics courses. I've been experimenting with different ways of using it and found that DaVinci's method is the simplest and surest, but you must unerstand the underlying anatomy to use this way. You must also not be a control freak. It is intended to be used "loosely," with a great deal of leaway for artistic license. Do not map this out on graph paper and start measuring tiny squares. Okay, I've been doing that all day, but only to verify results. Now that I've nailed down the method and trust it, I won't have to do it anymore, so, hang loose!I used this device today by going through my drawings and systematically applying the box construction method as a check on proportions. I used it in all views of the head - front, profile, three quarters and oblique. I was both horrified and well pleased by the distortions I was able to identify and correct. Monster size jaws, unintended, wonky forced-perspective effects - gone, like magic. Of course, I had to stick to it for hours to figure things out, but this is proof that I got it. (I know - I've got to work on presentation, but at least the examples are more or less clean.)
