Description
Tutorial for cutting a sailor collar pattern. I used newspaper for my own so it doesn't tear easily and can be used many, many times.Since the front seems to give people difficulty, here's an explanation that should hopefully help.
Once you have the rectangle cut out, you measure from the corner going across 2 and a half inches. Mark that spot and then measure from that same corner up 10 inches. Mark that and use a ruler to draw the angle. Do the same on the opposite side. That will be the outside curve of the collar.
For the inside, you'll need to fold the pattern in half so the points meet. Measure 10 inches up from the point side (on the fold), that's where the neck will be. From that mark, measure 2 and three quarter inches from the fold towards the open end (outside edge of the collar) and mark. That's how wide the back of the neck will be.
Use a ruler to draw the line from the outside edge of the neck down to the point. This line is the inside curve on the collar.
If you have any questions, I'll be glad to answer them.

Thanks. It's helpful. It's a little small. How should I add the inches to? The middle part or triangle parts

My mother and I are working on the pattern and for the back of the neck. If it is 5 1/2 inches then the measurements on the fold should be 2 3/4 inches instead 2 1/4 in order to make the full 5 1/2 in the middle for the back of the neck if I'm not mistaken? I deeply apologize if I'm wrong that part just confused the two of us.

Do you mean from where the edge was to the point or from the point to the center?

Ok, the easiest way to explain, I guess, is once you have the rectangle cut out, you measure from the corner going across 2 and a half inches.
From that mark, measure 2 and one quarter inches from the fold towards the open end (outside edge of the collar) and mark. That's how wide the back of the neck will be.
Use a ruler to draw the line from the outside edge of the neck down to the point. This line is the inside curve on the collar.
Does that help?

I understand the measurement, I meant what do you mean from the center? what exactly is it for?

It's so the collar can curve around your neck. If you make the front go straight down from the side or the center it'll be too wide on the v-neck seam or too narrow for the seam, respectively.
