Description It's finally done! c: Look at me, taking time for myself to actually get art done, and chilling out and just drawing some nostalgic warrior cats for fun.

This is a scene from the newest book, Crowfeather's Trial, and depicts Crowfeather on the left, Heathertail on the right, and Breezepelt on the far righthand corner, with the WindClan cats in the background being Nightcloud, Onestar, and Furzepelt/Insert-Background-Warrior-Here.Β

Still trying to get that cinematic look in my work - hopefully the depth and color schemes are working here. The composition was tricky at first because originally it was all inside the cavern, and then I changed it so the camera is in the cavern but you can see out into the opening to the surrounding fields.

Please let me know if there are any scenes from other books you'd like me to draw, or just anything you'd like to see from me in general! I will definitely try to make a certain subject a higher priority if I know people would like to see it from me. If not, just stay tuned and expect lots of cats, wolves, dragons, and the like? I would tell you what my next work would be yet I can never really tell what ends up getting finished when!

You can see an early, prototypical attempt to work with this composition here!

I'll be honest... I almost gave up on this artwork because it's been in the back of my computer for years Now, I'm glad I didn't!

Honestly beautiful. The shading and the detail is actually stunning. The backround and the cats are amazing! I love all the detail on the fur! Anyway, what I’ve noticed is the tail on the black cat is slightly to high. It’s kind of stiff? And his muzzle is at a slightly wrong angle. Also his two back legs and slightly stiff. But don’t get me wrong the art is amazing! Anyway. The brown cat’s eyes are slightly messy and to big. Also, for the black cat in the corner being Spoopy, his hind legs are at the wrong angle. And his eyes are slightly uneven. Other than the things i’ve Just pointed out, tis’ a amazing piece and it’s stunning. You should be very proud!

Thank you, Espeon! Even when I go for a more stylized look, I will keep those pointers in mind to make my anatomy more convincing! Maybe if I highly reference photos more often, I might improve getting the forms right? I would like to say that I'd do more life drawings, but the reality of it is that life drawing is kind of inaccessible for me if I want to paint things like dragons and tigers so I will stick to photos or drawings I think referencing others is one of the best, if not only, ways to practice something like that unfortunately there was for some time a stigma against copying images, so I think I'll have to dive right back into the references and resources and start getting those forms and shapes down right! Thanks for your feedback!

Nyaw! I love giving critique, and I think that using real life references would help!

Your neon style comes blazing through (per norm) in this piece, but it is infinitely less distracting than other pieces. Perhaps that is due to the cooler hues you're working with, or the fact that there are really only two dominant colors here (grey and blue), but this piece is much more mellow than some of your others. As a result, this is much easier to absorb as a viewer. Instead of taking a time to try and sort out what is what I can focus on your well done characters and the background does its job: It stays in the background.
The extreme background does seem a bit blurry, though that is more of a style choice than technique. Hence, there really isn't anything to gripe about there. I'm a detail oriented person, so I always pay too much attention to the background when I'm working. However, your choice to blur the background forces focus up the the characters in the front. Overall, it wouldn't have been my first choice but it does work for this piece.
Excellent work!

Thank you so much! I'm definitely going to keep my palettes more desaturated in the background at least, and let the characters or any significant focal points/objects be more vibrant instead. I spent a lot of time on this piece, so I'm glad it paid off somewhat. Thanks for commenting! It's fun to read critiques haha

I really love your piece! One thing tho, I really think that you did the cats perfect,(except that i think Crowfeather's tail is a bit too long and furry.)
but the background is a bit to smeared. And in other places, it is not smeared or blurred enough.
Also, the lighting on the cats is a bit off. The light should be a bit more slanted on their fir, instead of in a straight line.
The water near the cave entrance is too frantic and the lines should be a lighter shade of blue.
Overall this piece is absolutely amazing. Keep up the good work!

Thank you so much for taking the time and thoughtfulness to critique me! c: I am doing personal art with mostly just myself and the internet right now, so it means a lot that I receive considerate feedback!

I am glad you find the piece amazing and enjoy the overall impact of it!

Balancing clarity and chaos is definitely a spell I'm coming out of with my art. I was under pressure so in late high school/early college, I only sketched and scribbled and therefore lost a lot of my "fine motor" technique skills, if you will. Now that I have been spending more time forging on with my art, I hope that I will slow down, calm down, and start allowing myself to build back my craftsmanship. I agree understanding what places should be "tight" and which should be "loose" in the painting is a good place to start! What places would you say are too blurred or too sharp? Looking at this with your feedback in mind, I think maybe you mean the middle stalagmites and the view to the field are too blurry - and maybe areas like Crow's claws are too sharp?

Thanks for pointing out the lighting, that's been a drawing mistake of mine evident since middle school. I never chose a lighting direction, or think about light and color in an organized way - I just use my instinct and make a break for it. I have a tutorial book on lighting. Should probably start using it Β

Ah, interesting you see water there! My vision for that spot was something more along the lines of a grassy field, with a blue atmospheric tint. Hopefully if I work on the chaos/clarity and lighting direction inaccuracies, I can start getting my work to read better. I think I need to start using these paintings as underpaintings - then use tutorials and reference images with dicipline to actually make the rush sketch into an accurate image.

And yay - you like the cats! Damn I spent so much time on them. This is what I get to tell people at dinner parties now: I spend eight hours trying to perfectly align and shape the eyebrows of a cartoon cat. Should win me some suitors and followers one day, that statement. Anyways, thank you for taking your own time and critiquing me! As you can see, I really am touched that you do so!

Yeah! I feel you, I'm still in Middle School.
As an answer to the first question, I think that the water was not blurred enough, and the color difference was a bit drastic.
And yes, the stalagmites were a bit blurred. The lighting was a bit odd, but the shading is perfect.

The idea of the grassy field is a wonderful idea! I absolutely love your creativity! Keep drawing your wonderful artwork!
