Description I stared in awe at the creature that stood before me. I would have never have thought that when we first descended upon Artemis, that we weren't the first. I knelt before it, and looked at the strange flower-like gift it handed to me. A symbol of it's sapience, and perhaps it's welcome. We both stood frozen, perhaps uncertain, of how to represent our species'. I finally gathered the courage to reach out my hand, the human symbol for welcome, and take the gift, accepting it's welcome.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was massive and slender, unlike anything I had ever seen on this planet. It's body covered in strange materials, and it's head shaped like a massive dome, which housed an utterly alien face. I observed it's extra pair of limbs; a feature not shared on any creature known on our planet. It was then that I realized this being was otherworldly, and the same thunder and fire that came from the heavens brought it here. Our species had dealt with first contacts before, but only amongst ourselves, never something so different. It simply stood there, frozen, and that was when I made the first attempts at communication. With my tendril, I nervously handed it a gift, a symbol of welcome in my culture. To my relief, it accepted the gift, before striding off into the forest, perhaps to others of it's kind.

Woo. Sorry if the background looks a little rough, I've been working on this piece forever, so when I finally got the time to finish it, I kind of rushed on the background. I also apologize for the size; it was the only way to have the image in high quality.

EDIT: I fixed the size issue.

You're the one who did this... I saw it a long time ago though couldn't find it again.

Mind if I do a sort of remake of it? I'd credit the initial idea to you of course.

By all means feel free to do so. I've been meaning to remake this piece as my art has definitely evolved since, but you're free to your own interpretation

One of the things I really struggled with on these guys was clothes. Their body plan made it difficult to design clothing that was practical and had a pleasing aesthetic.

Their arms/legs are decently flexible, but they also have the tail for that. I should really post some sketches of these guys, they look a bit different now.

That is the most adorable sophont ever. Lovely presentation, with both points of view! I like that.

This. This is fascinating, I love that you included a passage written from both perspectives. Brilliant. C:

I was inspired by the novel A World of Difference by Harry Turtledove. It's a great read if you ever get the chance.

I wish the image weren't expanded when I reached the page, and the huge blank spaces at the top and bottom are disconcerting, but otherwise it is a cute little piece; the soft almost non-expression on the Artemean and the human's embrace capture the scene. I will admit the first paragraph threw me off, and for most of the second I believed that it was the human who was still talking. Judging from said paragraph, I'm guessing the Artemeans, while not yet at our current technological level, have already established some such framework by this point; if you had to compare them to a culture on Earth, at what level would you place them?

I don't know how to fix the zoom issue, sorry. I'll try and see if I can remove the blank spaces without sacrificing quality. As for the story, I couldn't think of any way to distinguish the two accounts without the bar separating both. I haven't had a chance to flesh out the Artemans yet, (I'm mostly focusing on the world at this point - I've noticed a lot of projects tend to be centered around the sapient species) but I'd probably compare them to most pre-industrial societies. Keep in mind, however, this is subject to change.

Nifty-looking alien. How do the tendrils work? Is there any more to the story?

Thank you I used tendril for lack of a better word, but it's probably more comparable to a proboscis. When not in use, it is stored in a cavity in the chest. The tendril's primary function is for feeding in a liquivorous manner (you can read more on this in my other deviations), but it can also be used to smell the air, and with the local sophonts, to manipulate objects.
