Description Disney's Cinderella, I saw it too many times during a six month time.
And I ended up feeling more and more sorry for the stepsisters every time. They are obviously so ugly that the prince himself, that you could hope would have some kind of manners, makes an "eww-face" in their presence.
I know it's a cartoon, but when viewed too many times you get so bored you start over thinking things. Just the idea that you can tell the difference between good and bad people on their looks, that is EWW!
So instead of drawing perfect Cinderella I made some kind of versions of her stepsisters and the cat - Inspired by the last time I watched Cinderella and pretended she was mentally ill and I as the watcher saw her distortion of reality. It became a "new" movie XD

Promarkers on paper.

Inspired by Cinderella and characters by Disney.

I wonder if their behaviour was considered more repulsive than their ugliness. Do you think beautiful stepsisters would bear no resentful feelings?

Solkatt In reply to Luiz4200 [2015-07-02 15:27:26 +0000 UTC]

The behaviour thing I can't tell from the movie, since I don't know how much time they spend with others, but there is of course possibilities they circle around the prince and the rest of the society acting repulsive. If it's covered in other stories it's still beyond the movie.
Of course I don't know what they say in other languages, but in the Swedish intro they actually say that the stepmother dislikes Cinderella because she is "so beautiful and kind" and with quite the undertone of "unlike her own daughters" (that can of course be imagined) and something about "she will make sure to give them everything" so she intends to spoil them, it seems. But still, if we are to assume they are among other people, why don't society somehow influence their behaviour outside their home? Should we also assume they are a bit "behind" in their minds? I sure hope not!
And be it an unpopular opinion or not, I still fail to believe Disney intended them to be beautiful in the "classical" meaning.
But I really, really wish they had pushed it to be more obvious with their behaviour then with their "looks".

(Quoting one of your lines below, since I wrote such a long thing before, so you know where I am (XD))
"Do you think beautiful stepsisters would bear no resentful feelings?"
That would hold no logic what so ever. In Disney-terms it would probably mean they where "angels", but that's part of the point, why not make lovely-looking "villains"? (I think they did a few later, just can't come up with a sample right now).
I think it's because we should not sympathize with them. Problem is, I do! XD

Sorry for the wall of text, I like to analyze, just as much as I find it pointless since the scope of most movies isn't about realistic relations XD

I meant the possibility of the stepsisters having nothing to resent Cinderella for if they were beautiful as well. Albeit i'd guess it was how Lady Tremaine raised them.

I always liked versions of Cinderella where the step sisters are the most beautiful girls in the kingdom and Cinderella is, well, not ugly, just not pretty or something like that, but the prince falls in love with her because she's the kindest girl he had ever met.  Just goes to show that looks shouldn't matter on a person.

Anistasia gets better over time in the movies.

The parks have these characters and the Stepmother out for Meet & Greets, and I'm glad they do. Comic villains make for better M&G's because they're easy to laugh at.

Interesting thoughts.
I think that the way they look is not necessarily "ugly", but the movie sets the standard after Cinderella.

This picture is wonderful! It really inspires me to go draw with my promarkers, something I (sadly) have not done in a long time.

Solkatt In reply to Hjortron-chan [2014-11-09 18:28:17 +0000 UTC]

Well, it is "stereotype ugly" I'm thinking of. I think I said to someone else they are kind of cute, but it's the designers intentions that drive me mad d:
if Cinderella was not there with "her perfection" they might have been considered fine^^

Yeah, promarker pictures get to look good - even for unprofessionals like me XD - they are kind of magical!
Should use them more often, both of us!^^

They look really good in the versioin, sweetie!

I can totally agree on that fact that "beauty is nice" ugly is bad" It is wrong to teach that to kids. But there actually is one episode in MLP that says that one should judge by the looks; Fugitive Flowers. as it says in the newer swedish dub, where "sailor Moon" makes the voice of Cherries Jubilee! "var försiktigt med att dömma andra. Det är bättra att försöka bry oss om varandra. - Fulheten kan vara vacker, skönheten kan vara ful"

I think in some versions of the Cinderella story one of stepsisters is actually nice to Cinderella. Also I didn't find them ugly in the original cartoon but they weren't very nice. I mean in several illustrations of Cinderella they actually look as beautiful as Cinderella.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Solkatt In reply to Cherry-Lane [2014-11-01 10:34:49 +0000 UTC]

Several of the Cinderella versions I've seen actually has pretty stepsisters, and as you mentioned, quite often one of the stepsister isn't all bad against Cinderella.
I don't know which is the original cartoon, so I can't back up on the thought.

And if we are talking Disney's version, I don't think they look totally horrible, they are kind of cute. But it is the knowledge that they have given them no stereotype beauty compared to Cinderella (who has close to all) that annoys me to no end

there is an anime callaed Cinderella Monogatami ( I think) teh whole series are on youtube in english, its old though, but that series is really good besides a few "doh"-moments, like talking animals curtesy of fairy godmother, and Cinderella can understand them too.

In this series, the sisters are actuallu beautyful, the uglyness is only in their personalitoes, but even in this show they have some good moments. In some Cinderella-inspired movies they tend to make one of the sisters beautyful and the other not just ugly but stupid too.

Now Disneys Cinderella obviously exaggerrated their traits, and as akid I think you do belive the prince find them as ugly as the audience, even if it is intended to just be for fun, as an adult I see it more as he just don't find them attractive and made a slip up and showed it...he is supposed to be human after all.....

I never liked Cinderella as a kid though....today I can appreciate it, not love it though...but I absolutely adore third on - A twist of Time. I tell you, it made me cry!

Okay enough blabbering, I think it is interesting how you watched it this last time, and the outcome of it too.

Solkatt In reply to Linnzy [2014-10-30 11:55:31 +0000 UTC]

I have watched a lot of Cinderella on YouTube last month, one of my favourites was the anime-looking series  - the name of it I don't remember
Also watched "an ugly stepsisters confession" or the name was similar.
Along with many others.
My favourite version of all the Cinderella versions I've watched is still "Ever After", but that might be because I've seen it so many times and it's been among my favourite movies for years XD
Someday I will watch some of the German versions too^^

I don't think Disney's Cinderella has that depth of character at all, to me Cinderella isn't human so I don't expect the prince to be XD
And I know it's a cartoon and that the audience are suppose to laugh at their ugliness. I also know that I feel more "pain" form it since people have told me I'm ugly way more times then I ever heard the opposite.

Haha, for me it's more the opposite, I liked it as a kid, but now I got a brain that analyzes too much so I usually just enjoy how beautifully done the movie is XD
I remember liking the movie A Twist in time when I saw it, but I can't back up much of it now since I have forgotten too much^^

It was a fun mind game, but she became a bit too creepy XD

I've also watched an ugly stepsisters vonfession, it was quite good from what i can remember.

I used to love Ever After, but today, i think I'm more into Ella Enchanted.

Have you watched Disneys Musical Cinderella with brandy, Whitney Houston and a few more celebrities, I think it is from 1997, It used to be up on youtube but i can't find it anymore. Just the soundtracks. It was hilarious, and what even more funnire, they didn't think one bit about races and genes and stuff...the king is white, the queen is afro-american (Whoopie Goldberg) and their son, the prince, is Asian!

Ad for the stepsisters, yeag they just made them ugly and stupid, one overweight who loves food and the other tall and way to thin.

Solkatt In reply to Linnzy [2014-11-01 10:52:15 +0000 UTC]

I thought it was fine, it had another twist to it from the others

I think what I like most about Ever After is how well written the story is.

When you describe the actors I do remember seeing it at some point! I remember liking it but totally forgot the rest, like what it was all about. I just remembered how fascinated I was that they dared do those lovely mixed families

I think that was a common "gag" during the 90's, so I'm not too chocked

Captain-Savvy [2014-10-29 20:45:20 +0000 UTC]

I never liked that the stepsisters whole personalities were wrapped up in their looks. I think one of them got her own story arc in one of the squeals but I never actually saw it. And like Kya-Valentine I hate when cats are portrayed as evil characters.

That being said, this is gorgeous! I love it

Yeah, in the second movie the orange-haired (sorry, I keep forgetting their English names, for some reason they changed them in Swedish) one had like her own 20 minutes of spotlight and she finds love. I like that she became nice and so, but still saddens me that "stereotype ugly girl" gets "stereotype ugly guy". Why can't ever "stereotype ugly girl" get "hot handsome guy"? Opposite happens a lot in movies *always have something to whine about, haha*

Thank you!^^

Linnzy In reply to Captain-Savvy [2014-10-29 23:02:39 +0000 UTC]

In teh second (which was a compilation of short-movies told by the animals and fairy godmother) Anastasia (redhead) got a love interest, she fell in love with the baker, and Cinderella offered to help her too. I liked that, in third movie A twist in Time, the Evil Stepmom makes Anaststia taking Cinderellas place to become the future princess, and Anastasioia is overjoyed at first, she even goes so far that she agrees to transform into Cinderella ( they stole Fairy godmothers wand) I loved the third movie.

I, honestly, wish they had made the stepsisters pretty to show little girls that the 'ugly' can be on the inside as well. And they were results of their mother's ugliness - more so than through their own faults (though they were to blame as well).

This is gorgeous, by the way - they seem so much sweeter and gentler and Lucifer is adorable!! I always hate when they make cats evil >I

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Solkatt In reply to Kya-Valentine [2014-10-30 11:38:12 +0000 UTC]

I think so too. Maybe they would have if the movie was made today?
I can't help but wanting Disney to do a more modern and new version of the story. Something deeper and easier to relate to^^
But back to the actual movie, I think the stepsisters behavior is enough to tell they are horrible. And it annoys me to no end that they have no single "stereotype beauty" in them while Cinderella has about close to all.
Bottom line is, don't watch the same movie too many times in too short a time XD

Thank you!
Yeah, I wanted to make a cuter Lucifer since he is both mean and not very pretty in the movie, considering he seems to be resembling Persian cats.
He actually seems to be one of the smarter characters in the movie, and a cat is not evil just because he chaises mice! But I suppose Disney crew loves mice so, no further comments on that from my part XD

Kya-Valentine In reply to Solkatt [2014-10-30 12:12:07 +0000 UTC]

Agreed - I would love to see a more modern version of Cinderella. I mean, the Evil Queen in Snow White was actually pretty for when the movie came out. So why they couldn't make the 'ugly' step-sisters pretty outwardly is beyond me. But I doubt that they will make a new Cinderella since she's a part of their Princess lineup :/ I'd still love to see it though XD

I know - poor Lucifer is doing what a cat is supposed to do - especially in that time period - and he's treated like a monster for it!

Haha - my mom learned not watch a movie over and over again when she had to do it with the Wizard of Oz to do costumes for a spa company XDDD She now hates that movie LMAO

You're welcome ^_^ I love seeing re-imaginings of characters. And you did a great job on them all. Now I'm curious what type of mental illness Cinderella had to make her view her stepsisters in such a way XDDD
