if its water based clay you should dab over all the parts out side of the open wound with a damp sponge, gives a really good skin texture, there is also if you spread clear sandwich wrap like two layers thick and lightly poke it with something small and round gives a pretty good texture as well.

I've seen it done, I also like the orange skin idea if you've heard of it.. it's got a similar texture to skin, but I haven't tried it yet.

oh yeah, take a silicone or latex cast out of a orange, i've done that with a collie flower used it to make bubbling fat cells on a human heart im working on.
