Description
Gimp is a free alternative to other artwork editing programs such as: Adobe Photoshop, Corel Painter/Paint Shop Pro, Open Canvas, etc. It is easy to use, and free to download and a good alternative for those artists who can't afford pricey software. You can download it here: [link]____________
How to make a transparent background. It works the same way for all types of media (photograph, digital, pixel, etc), just takes more effort for more complicated pieces.
I tried to make it simple enough that it didn't need words to explain, but I will be happy to if anyone is confused.

MORE IMPORTANT EDIT
Because its a little unclear, in Step 3 you need to choose the Magic Wand to select areas you want transparent.
EDIT!
Since having put this up, I have learned much more about GIMP. With that in mind, I want to make a clarification about step #10.
As far as the compression level goes, moving the bar to a higher number (like 9) saves your artwork at a smaller file size.
Saving as a smaller number (like 1) saves your artwork as the actual (therefore a larger) file size.
There are advantages and disadvantages with both.
For instance, if your art piece is very large, saving as '1' will mean that your file may be large and take up a few MBs.
But if you save as a small file such as '9', it may hurt the quality of your image.
So depending on how much disk space you have on your computer and how important quality is to you, you can choose whatever number, for the compression level, that you like. =]
[Obviously if you have a small image, saving as '1' shouldn't be a problem.
OH! and make sure Interlacing (Adam 7) is checked too. ;]

Alright, it's transparent, but I don't know what to save it as so it will work on dA. I've tried PNG and BMP but when you go to full view it still shows it having a black background..?

I think it's a problem with dA, I honestly don't know how to fix it.
Others have had problems with that too. [link]

It works for me and the file is not even on the computer I'm using.
Try again or just use the deviation image. It's big enough to see everything.

Ohhh, I see. Sorry.
Okay, well, I just tried it and it worked so try this:
1. Do you have Windows? The download only works for Windows.
2. Did you click on "Download GIMP 2.6.7" - Installer for Windows 2000 and above?
3. Save the file
4. Wait for it to download
5. Double-click the file and then click run
It should work.

I think you are a bit confused. The point of this tutorial is to remove the background.

oh.
make a new layer underneath it.

somuchluv In reply to Beshflorin [2009-10-05 17:45:29 +0000 UTC]
go to the layers panel and at the bottom there should be a button that looks like a folder and has a + on it.
I cant be of too much help because I no longer have Gimp on my computer so i cant check for you.
look around for tutorials that teach you about layers.

What part of it isnt working for you? Does the background not disappear when you select with the Magic Wand and use Cut?
And yes, in small view it will show up with a black background on dA; I can do nothing about that. It doesnt bother me as I view everything in fullview, but you can ask the help desk about it if you want.

try un-checking 'save color values from transparent pixels'
and then why dont you try submitting one of them so i can take a look?

If you are doing everything the exact same way as when it worked, then they should all be transparent.
Other than that, i dont know what to tell you except that like i said, its a problem with dA and theres nothing i can do about it.

I love you for making this, but I still have a problem;
I drew my icon in MS Paint, then copied/pasted it into GIMP. Then I tried to follow your steps. But the layers and channels aren't showing up, and even when I try and add/remove them, nothing happens. You wouln't by any chance have the solution to this...? :<
