You do know that Wendy had Yul Brenner in mind when she created Cutter

I'm sure I've read it somewhere. This painting really embodies the connection!

I actually took a drawing from Wendy's comics [link] and painted right on top of it. But I used a reference of Yul's face for all the coloring.

This is beautiful; you managed to call out all the sharp ferocity of a Wolfrider, and yet somehow there's still a hazy, dreamlike feel to him.
One bit bothers me, though; I feel like my eyes are just a bit out of focus when I look at the image. I understand the blurred background (which was a very good technique to use, by the way! - but I feel like the blur comes back within Cutter's figure. It's made more jarring by the fact that some pieces - the vest in particular - really do pop out in stark detail (I love the leather effect, by the way!).
Not sure how best to suggest fixing that, though - particularly since for the most part you seem to be avoiding outlines as much as possible. Best I can think of would perhaps be to deepen the shadows on Cutter himself. Especially if you're going for a moonlit effect - less reflected light from the surroundings tend to make light and shadows more stark. (And New Moon in particular needs a touch-up - it looks downright flat in comparison to, say, the details on Cutter's body...)
Sorry - you requested critique, and the picture was so wonderfully beautiful that I had to say something...

Thanks very much. You're absolutely right. This image needs lots of touch ups. As I told my wife I usually don't put pen to paper until someone pays me to do so. I just got so in to the experiment and pushed it further than I usually do.
I could spend another week on the touch ups of this image. Perhaps I will some day. I am considering doing an Elfquest calendar coloring all my favorite EQ moments. I talked to Wendy about it last night and she loves the idea so it's a strong possibility that will happen.

I think this is amazing! Really excellent color use and shading. It's not quite "Cutter", though, but rather a gorgeous person dressed as Cutter would be. There's something missing in his facial features that reads as him, but, that's also something to be expected when drawing a character of someone else's creation. Also, the blur effect is a little...distracting in certain places, particularly his right (the viewer's left) arm.
Overall, I think this is most excellent! It's beautiful and painterly and you've done a marvelous job at rendering this in your own style. Excellent!

Honestly I don't think anyone (even Wendy) could make a a realistic rendering of Cutter that would please everyone. As a matter of fact Wendy herself has done "realistic" paintings of Cutter that many people didn't accept. Something about it just didn't look "right." How could it not? She created it, for goodness sake! And yet...
The problem is a black and white cartooned drawing is incomplete and so the veiwer projects their own conceptualizations to fill in the blanks.
The most interesting thing about this effect to me is that it happens more with characters that have been established by one person than by a publishing house. For instance Batman has changed drastically and in many ways since his conception and yet, for the most part, no one has a problem with the artist of the month's interpretation. You can warp and twist Batman in so many ways and it's still Batman.
With this method I essentially traced Wendy's drawing in color and yet to you it didn't ring true. In your mind the subtleties of facial shading were a bit different than what I see in my mind. Which, to me, is very cool because it means Cutter is much more special to his readers than the mass produced Batman.
When I drew for Wendy I was voted one of the top 5 non-Wendy artists and yet for some it wasn't close enough. Which I totally related to since I prefer Wendy drawings myself. EQ is something very special and more akin to fine art than pop-art.

Well, technically I shouldn't be allowed to call myself a "fan artist" since I was Wendy's apprentice and drew two 58-paged stories for WARP graphics...but make no mistake, I will ALWAYS be a fan of Wendy's, so even when I am receiving a paycheck from WARP it's because I have produced fan art
Thank you so much for the compliment!
