Hey I just realized I can show a preview of my ElfQuest color work over Wendy Pini's awesome drawings...kind of. This is from the two paged adΒ Dark Horse Comics put in Previews.ΒSorry, it is so shadowy but Previews is a thick, thick catalog and there is no way I am tearing this page out to scan.
I really like Dark Horse's tagline "Dark Horse Builds Characters. " If I were to sum up any of my jobs it would "helps to build characters." Though that would look strange on a resume

Love the harmony! None of the colors are overstated. Am also appreciating the consistency of shadow- (Strongbow facing Cutter, for example). Great work!

Well, while my first instinct (since it's Elfquest) is the usual squee and 'love it!'... I shall engage my art critique brain for a moment and offer up some critique.
I really like the contrast between the purples and the more yellow/orange tones of the foreground characters in the top three panels (and overall). Aside from liking purple, the warmth makes them pop out nicely. I think the only thing that I would have liked to see is a little more depth of shadow on those front characters (and possibly on Cutter in the bottom panel, and Stronbow's shirt). Not a dramatic difference, but a little more deepening for dimension and dynamic (I know too much darker, especially on Strongbow, and there'd be issues seeing his facial details, but a little more contrast... just a shade or so deeper). There's such a lovely light/dark contrast in the background with the solid black and the vibrancy of purple, that the front characters (particularly up top) feel a tiny bit flat to me.Β
Though having seen your comment below that this particular copy was an in-progress you may have already changed that!Β
Yeah, I think in tweaks. Overall, it's lovely.Β I thoroughly enjoyed drooling over this!Β

Yeah...unfinished. Also you can't see the nuances in this copy. When you see the actual comic it'll even be better than looking at the ad. Previews is printed on gray paper so every color gets grayed.Β

*Nods* Unfinished copies do make it tougher to judge. I fully expect that when I get the pretty finished one when it comes out my comments will invalidated by the awesomeness.

oooh a sneak peek!<3 i see we'll get to see interaction between Dart and his sister.^^ personally feel strange because i've read the prologue and i can't speak freely for fear of spoiling it for everyone...this is new for me! XD
i think the coloring looks fantastic! very lovely. the only nitpick i can find is i would have put some kind of light shine on the crystal shard in Strongbow's...uh...choker i guess? i know it's twilight, but it's a living shard of the palace! it's unnatural, so a little shine would have been nice. but that's me.^^

Holy crap! Thanks for pointing that out. I could've sworn I did make that glow. I just check the original and it's there. The printer must not have had all of the photoshop layer on when they printed it. Hopefully it was just for previews and they haven't printed the book yet.Β

This just in...apparently that was an unfinished page that Richard had sent in as a progress report but Dark Horse printed it not knowing. Richard assures me the finished version will have the glow

Unfortunately, I have to wait till the combined volumes come out (assuming they come out anyway, like The Discovery XP) Since I recently lost my job, importing them from the USA is not really affordable at the moment XP

I love that you used a cool purple tone to 'pop' the characters in the foreground while still keeping some subtle hints of that background color in the character's hair and etc ... Really beautiful work.

Thanks! This scene happens just after twilight so you can get away with purple. Things get trickier in the dead of night color interest-wise.Β
