These are beautiful. The Creativity one reminds me a bit of the work you did when you worked for the Pinis. Her face is really lovely. The Phoenix just looks manically happy. The both came out fantastically. I always love seeing new work from you.

Any time I take myself seriously in art it has a Pini-esque look to it. Probably why they hired me in the first place

Most likely. I still have that drawing you gave me of Krillin with the Pini-esque elf ears.
Btw, caught up on We Shadows. Love it. I remember you were doing or going to do a comic about moving into a house with fairy folk in it. Did We Shadows evolve from that idea?

this is beautiful. Man, what an interesting concept to ask an artist to draw. And the beauty of it is everyone would draw something different. I bet even you could have drawn multiple versions of the personification of creativity. Love it!

I mentioned on facebook that if Einstein's assumption that we all just might be our own centers of the Universe then of course such archetypes would have to be uniquely presented. As for me I drew 2 images before this but each one lead to this one.

I understand, that's very true. Taking this concept of personified creativity when applied to one person, it is what inspires them. It is personal. Even if a group of people agree on multiple aspects, no one will see it in quite the same way.
I took a look at your conversation about the piece on facebook, and since I cannot comment there, I will comment here.
First off, I had to view your piece several times to see everything and I believe that that is how art and creativity are. Art is multi-layered and has its subtleties when done right. It draws the audience in but then in turn because of the subtleties it does lead to different conclusions and opinions of the artwork. I do agree that ultimately art should be done for the artist, not for the audience. This translates to other art forms besides fine arts as well. I was talking to one of my musically inclined friends and they were telling me how they had a passion and a talent for creating their own songs. However, when they would play at coffee shops and other public venues, all the audience wanted to hear were covers of popular songs. This is a concept that has been eating at me and depressing me for awhile. I do think that it is possible to make art for yourself and for others. I want to create more original art and in time I will. I do know from experience of doing art at conventions that the pieces that I had the most fun with and enjoyed doing more, are for the most part the ones that the audience are drawn to as well. That is why I agree that you should do art for yourself but also know your audience. That passion will come through in the artwork and others can sense it even if they are unaware of that fact.
Also I am glad you get laud for your V/A work because you are talented in that area as well and deserve it. It is sad, however, to know that your art is not as appreciated on facebook, but I guess that makes sense and is why it is a very good thing that there is deviantart.

Luckily for my ego I've been given a couple of DDs here
Agreed, art should first please the artist. In it's purest form it's goal is solely to please the artist. If other enjoy it fine. But that is not necessary. Of course, one has to eat and so we all have to compromise from time to time and create stuff we know is going to sell. Very few are lucky enough to produce a total uncompromising body of work. I know many successful cartoonists who, believe it or not, even when working on their own titles have to sell out a bit simply because they no longer want to work on it. They want to move on to other things but the public demand is still there and, well, we all gotta eat.

I am so glad you were given multiple well deserved DDs! Congratulations.
It's a bit sad to think that would happen, but I can definitely understand cartoonists getting tired of drawing the same thing day in and day out. Even if they started out loving what they were doing. I am sure new projects are very exciting.

Sonny... Your work is beautiful. I even see improvements since your ElfQuest days, which I didn't think was possible! The only critique I have is that in the image on the right, it took me a minute to realize the "S" wasn't part of the signature. lol. I love the design on her dress... like teeth eating planets, right? I can only guess as to all the symbolism going on in that image!
Love them both.

Yay, if that's your only critique since I was hoping you'd have to take a second to find the "S"

And nope... no other critiques. The composition is great in both and the balance of black and white space is great. I especially like the use of negative space in the one on the right.

Oh very cool! I especially like the personification of creativity with all the symbols and the compass directions. Dark phoenix looks so intense and interesting to draw. Way to go Sonny!
