since i am prone to changing my mind constantly this might not be 100% set in stone ><

even if Celestian is meant to be the first of his kind, the notion of him just appearing out of thin air from nothing is driving me crazy >>; i originally showed him hatching out of a crystal but then decided to give him an ancestry with some logical beginning. in hindsight maybe i am just overthinking stuff but it's too late now cuz i already drew this.

this is focused mainly on Daetorious (now on riku's account ) who has a very thick dragon tail. little tiny bunny tails or thin kitty tails probably won't affect the rest of the anatomy much at all. i was stumped for a while on how a mermaid could evolve. the irl "mermaid syndrome" where a baby is born with legs fused is usually fatal because they don't have the organs that are supposed to go between the legs. in order to survive, all that stuff has to be moved to the front of the body (like a dolphin/whale/etc). when i was doing a little thought experiment on how adding a (big) tail would affect the rest of human anatomy it naturally lead to "bigger tails push the other organs forward" (meaning yep, daetorious technically doesn't have a "butt crack" like humans). i personally don't like the kind of mermaids where they look like a person wearing a costume and look like they have knee joints in their tails so i like the idea of starting with a human then adding a tail then making the tail big enough to swim with then taking away the legs (which also naturally results in the co-evolution of nagas)

there is a huge variety of different tails both in regards to being stuck on a person's butt and in regards to different styles of mermaid-type creatures and nagas. only the one resulting in a Serafin is shown here. originally i had him come from a merperson with legs like a hipoocampus centaur then had the legs rotate to the back of the body and mutate into wings, but i can't have anything resembling a horse without the possibility of it having a pegasus mutation available so i changed it to that then just had him lose his front legs. now i have an entirely new species here that would be the predecessor of serafins in that they were a mermaid-type creature that could also fly so that it lived in both the water and the air. before them were the mercentaur/hippocampus centaur. in Thespiria , a hippocampus-type centaur/mermaid lives in the water in that single form and a kelpie is a creature that shapeshifts back and forth from a centaur into a mermaid. in thespiria, centaurs have their organs in the horse-body and the human torso is just a neck with arms so this shape-shift transition never really quite made sense before. i wanted to include "convergent evolution" where completely different species without a common ancestor evolve to have similar traits so that something may "look like" something else (for example human x horse) but actually not have any relation to either. this would mean a kelpie's land form "looks like" a centaur but actually is a hippocampus mermaid with four legs, having all the organs in the torso instead of the lower body. kelpies were originally involved in the original storyline plan involving "the sixth main character who still hasn't appeared yet" (with the main cast being celestian, daetorious, valkyrja, baby doll, alastor and ???)
