Description My prize winner for the day. Theres not much I can say about this photo other than I love it to death.

Now that I've tweaked this photo and added the border I kinda want to do the same to the others.....damn.

EDIT: This photo has been published in the Competitor News, a local rodeo news publication!! I'll post a copy of it when I get mine (no I havent seen it yet) I found out from the riders MOM calling me about getting prints of the image! I'm so glad he'll be able to enjoy it.

So all of my images from Helix will be going up online if any of you are interested here [link]

Also I thought you would all enjoy this little tidbit of info, the rider, his name is RC, is only 16!!

I wish I could have been there it seems like these broncs really know about the business and how to give a cowboy a great ride.

"A car?"
"Nope, I want to ride a bareback bronc that flies 20 feet in the air"

I don't agree that it's required. A far better way to protect your rights is just to put the pic up at a resolution too low to get decent prints from, say 800px the longer side. If anyone rips it at that res it's irritating but you don't actually lose anything.

TheHollister In reply to sorrelstang [2007-10-30 02:44:33 +0000 UTC]

I already had the addiction. You just settled the what-occupation-am-I-going-to-marry question. I remember being about 5 with my cowboy hat and little hobby horse swearing I'd be a cowgirl. I ride now, but just English. Over the past year though, I've developed a ...craving (?I suck at words) to ride western. I want to do barrel racing. SO BLOODY BADLY. And I also want to do bull riding...
Do girls do bull riding?

sorrelstang In reply to TheHollister [2007-10-30 03:19:37 +0000 UTC]

We can do whatever we want I think ~saudimack has some photos in her gallery of when she rode a bull not long ago. It was pretty sweet Barrel racing is a kick, I want to get into it when I get my horse

Cowboys in general are a pretty good breed of guys. First off, they understand your love of horses which is a major plus, also, a large percentage of them are sweet country boys and make good marrying

I'll have a horse one day... when I get off my arse and get a job. Right now I can afford to buy a horse, but I can't afford to keep it alive.

*sigh* I wish I knew a cowboy. Whenever I go to the fairs (like once or twice a year) they're always so nice even though I'm a moron when it comes to western and always ask them questions.
Now that I think of it, I've never met ANY guys that ride. And I've been going for more than 6 years now.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sorrelstang In reply to TheHollister [2007-10-30 21:06:40 +0000 UTC]

I totally know how that goes. I could buy a horse right now (especially with all the good broke horses that people are practically dumping before winter comes ) but then it would want to, like, eat and stuff lol

Real cowboys can be a pain to find if you're not in the middle of wyoming or something. My problem was always that I have a thing for the shy ones...so I'm too shy to talk to them and they're too shy to talk to me....its very inconvenient lol Try looking around for smaller western events held by barns/arenas like roping, sorting, cutting. Theres probably a practice bull riding pen somewhere in the area too. They may take some driving to get to, but you never know, it could be worth it

TheHollister In reply to sorrelstang [2007-10-30 21:57:29 +0000 UTC]

My cousin told me that I can breed her horse in a few years if I pay the stud fee. Which is great because her horse is AMAZING. She can be a real arse though so I hope that whatever baby I get takes after its father.

A loooong drive in my case. I live right it the middle of the biggest city in the country, apparently. Makes it a right pain to get anywhere there's horses. I've started trying to look up western stables that I can go to next year when I'm out of school. It's one of those rip-my-hair-out tasks.
I love the shy ones.

OK, I'll admit it's a bloody good photo. But don't aprove of what's going on in the slightest. If anyone ever put a strap around my horses back end I'd murder them. Just plain crewl.

Mangoe In reply to perfect12386 [2007-12-27 23:52:28 +0000 UTC]

the horse is obviously fine, and to the looks of how high he's jumping, lovin ittt!!! look at his ears you rodeo knocker XD its what theyre bred to do, his ears are in a very CONTENT position. So whats going on is the situation is definitely not cruel.

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

sorrelstang In reply to perfect12386 [2007-08-23 23:29:26 +0000 UTC]

When used properly flank straps are an aid like any other. Bits and spurs can be cruel when used improperly, but 90% of the time they are simply there to accentuate aids. I watched something absolutely brilliant just yesterday at my local rodeo: on the first jump out the bronc lost his flank strap...and didnt miss a beat. He bucked the full 8 seconds and continued to do so until his rider was on the ground. My point being, with or without this strap these horses know that when they come out of the chute, its time to go to work. Flank straps simply tell the horse "accentuate that action!".

I suppose if you've never been to an event or are unfamiliar with it its easy to misunderstand. Just as your horse has been trained to respond to leg pressure and the bit, these horses have been trained to know what to do when pressure is applied to their flanks...buck!

And thats what I've got to say on that today

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

freeburgfreak In reply to sorrelstang [2007-10-23 09:26:46 +0000 UTC]

Except that the flank is the most sensitive part of the horse, and any pressure on that area, sheepskinned or not, is going to hurt them. Horses buck out of pain or highspirits, I doubt this horse is happy. How can I tell? We can start with its expression, or the fact that horses aren't meant to jump vertically that high.

Perhaps some are trained, but I see any type of training with a flank strap as unethical.
