Description
Fear, a core instinct which separates the living from the dead. Ancient and primal, Not even the drakes at their mightiest could deny its hold on them, or the atrocities they committed because of it, sins they wished forgotten with a new era. With the rise of Phobos, the drakes would see their deepest fears manifest, their ancestors' sins turned against them. Phobos, The Survivor, Old Red Claw, The Bloody Bull, Crom Cruach,Balor, He is known by many names, but to all he is known as the draconian god of fear, insanity, madness, and nightmares.
personality: Very few could claim they knew Phobos, let alone knew him well. Not even those closest to him, his wives or his many children, knew anything more than the monster the legends made him out to be. Phobos kept many secrets and his motivations, while selfish, were anything but purely malicious in nature. For reasons known only to him, he sought an order to his chaos and his reign over the drakes of earth reflected this. He was controlling, an overbearing tyrant, dominating his people through fear to the point of breaking. What minds he could not break, he would instead implement force. Nobody was safe from Phobos' cruelty, not even his own children or their mothers. While infamous for being cold and remorseless, the truth was Phobos was just as afraid as any of his subjects. His need for control was but a symptom of his own fears of loss and change. Unknown to the public, he was not truly heartless, at least not originally, but was so dominated by his fears he could cause nothing but further torment for himself and others which slowly turned him more and more into the monster others knew him as. Despite his status as a god now, he still falls victim to the very fears he was slave to when he was just a normal drake, and clings to life even when he has none to lose.
Powers: Phobos radiates a strong fear inducing aura which manifests lifelike illusions and disorients those around him. unlike his children, he possesses significantly moreΒ control of who and how his powers affect others and can project this influence over great distances. prolonged exposure is known to inevitably shatter minds and drive his victims to total insanity. The mind is Phobos' plaything, he is able to siphon knowledge and manipulate memories as well as alter the perception of the world around him as events are still playing out. The eye which replaces a royal crown gem on his forehead is the epicenter of all his power, to view it directly or be at the center of its gaze is said to be so horrible that whoever is unfortunate to do so will die of fright, or beg for death on the spot. Phobos feeds on the fear of his victims and grows stronger with the more fear he consumes. By consuming the knowledge of his victims he has become quite knowledgeable in the ways of magic and methods of magic long thought lost to drakes. He is fluent in the old drake tongue, a language which possessed magical power with every word, and named all of his children with an old drake word to empower them with their own spheres of influence like minor gods. His natural affiliation with the elements is to both fire and earth as he was a hybrid drake before becoming a draconian.
abilities: Immortality is natural to any draconian god but few can function properly when their body is incapacitated. Phobos is one of those few who doesnt actually need his body to be powerful. Phobos resides and thrives in both the physical plane and mindscape, an incorporeal and psychic plane of existence which connects all minds together and where dreams and nightmares take place . In the mindscape, Phobos' power has almost no equal, rightfully earning him a place as the drake god of nightmares as well as a draconian. Phobos on the physical plane is still no less a threat, he is proficient in various forms of combat and weaponry and is also considerably strong. Phobos' regenerative abilities fluctuate based on how much fear he has to feed on. He can take any form he pleases and is a master shapeshifter. While he naturally only has one arm, his second arm still exists, not unlike a phantom limb, which he uses to reach into the minds of others. While it cannot be physically seen or felt in his base form, it manifests properly in his true form as a skeletal red claw which can rend the mind and spirit from his victims with ease.
History: Phobos was once just a common drake who went by the name of "Aurus", a golden furred hybrid of an earth and fire drake, and just one of a rather large family made up almost entirely of farmers. With no status or nobility to his family's name, Aurus lived an average but happy life for a young drake during High King Searen's post-empire reign, a time of peace and stability. This was never to last though. On Aurus' 20th year his world would end. Without warning Nagaetros, The first draconian, began his apocalyptic killing spree on the unknowing drakes of the world. No drake would be spared from the bloodshed Naga would unleash in this time. With more than half their population slaughtered from the chaos god's assault their world was forever changed. The surviving drakes struggled to make sense of the calamity, but none struggled quite like the young Aurus. In just one night, among the first of this new god's existence, the draconian had tormented and killed the young drake's entire family. Naga had seemingly left Aurus for dead among their corpses broken and mutilated, but the lone survivor, and the only one who knew what horrors had occured that night.
With Naga's eventual defeat by the young prince Helios and his sister Circe the survivors sought to move on and rebuild, but Aurus couldnt. His experience as a victim to Naga's cruelty had changed him. He had lost everything and now with the world in chaos he was being ordered by the newly crowned High King Helios to leave the planet and follow the rest of his race to a new world and start over, which would not do. Aurus spoke out against Helios, he refused to leave. He had survived Naga and earned the right to stay where he felt safe. His words gathered a following, other survivors who did not wish to follow their young ruler had found solace in Aurus' words to stay on earth. Helios could not force them and with a heavy heart allowed them to stay while he and those loyal to him would move on, but did so promising Aurus and his followers the offer would always stand. This new society, no longer part of the original drake civilization, saw Aurus as their new leader which he accepted with the promise to make everything right, that they would find peace again. The survivors started to rebuild and create a new city located in what is now known as northern Europe. This new city thrived and all seemed well, but as with all things this too started to change. With new pressures as a leader Aurus had found stability with a new bride and starting a family of his own, but this would end with a cruel hand of fate. For years Aurus' dreams were plagued by the events that took place the night he lost his family. The secret he kept of how he had actually survived that night, where anyone else should have died, was forever burned into his nightmares to be relived like a personal hell. Aurus considered these dreams as his punishment and bore them in silence, but they would only remain a dream for so long. One night he awoke from this nightmare to find his once golden fur stained crimson red with blood. His wife lay dead next to him just as his family was that night so long ago. He had transformed. no longer was Aurus a drake, but another draconian just as Naga was. He had become what he had sacrificed so much to avoid.
Years would pass and Aurus had become an unseen and reclusive lord, governing his territory from deep within his home. He had a palace built to replicate the original royalty's, which had been lost with the great exodus. He had taken a new name in the old drake tongue which roughly translated to what we would know now as "Phobos". His only apparent connection to the outside world were the children he had fathered with his first wife; "necrosis" and "manias", both similarly named in the old drake tongue. Through them Phobos controlled the drakes who had once happily followed him, once full of hope, now nothing more than the "hopeless", just trying to live day by day in their cold and unloving world as their "king" fed on their fear. Phobos would try to find love again many times over the years, only for his new brides to go insane in his presence, leaving him no choice but to kill them in an unfortunate and desperate cycle. With each wife he would have two children, and with their mothers' deaths he would raise them to serve him as tools and weapons to better control his realm, effectively detaching himself from any emotional ties he could form with them.
Over time, more draconian would arise; The Mother Spider, Devastinian, but most notably Fenris, the draconian god of vengeance. After decades of their world freezing and their people stagnating one of Phobos' eldest sons, Manias, sought to betray his father and made a broken deal with Fenris to defeat Phobos at the cost of the kingdom itself, a deal with would be carried out and backfire on the demi-god. Fenris arrived at Phobos' palace to be met by Necrosis instead. Necrosis fought to defend his father but was no match for the god and was slain. Enraged at the betrayal of Manias, the death of Necrosis, and the threat to his power, Phobos engaged Fenris in battle. For one whole week Fenris and Phobos fought, destroying the city and killing thousands as collateral. It was not until the last survivor of the city escaped that Fenris could finally defeat Phobos, freezing him and what was left of his kingdom in a great glacier, frozen in time. With Necrosis dead and Manias missing the last survivors of Phobos' kingdom, lead by his remaining children, left earth to join Helios and the rest of the drakes on their new world, accepting the offer Aurus could not. Phobos however would never truly leave them. He followed them in their dreams, haunted their memories, and influenced drake and human culture as a god of nightmares. Phobos continues his work to this day as an unavoidable and ever present force of fear, waiting to be freed from his frozen prison.
