Description
The sun beat down relentlessly on the valley, waves of heat washing over the herd below. Perseus had luckily been able to find a nearby cave where some of the mares now rested, out of the blazing sun. Percy looked out from the cool, damp darkness onto the field outside, keeping an eye on the foals. They seemed to have found a much more entertaining way to beat the heat.Awryl whinnied loudly as she leapt into the small river, sending water splashing in every direction. Calida and Colden bucked and reared in the shallow water, soaking themselves in the process. Despite their age differences, all of the foals got along well and now they frolicked and played happily together. Their laughter and squeals of delight echoed across the valley and Percy was sure everyone within miles could hear them.
And maybe he was right.
Across the valley he could see a herd approaching. His ears perked up and he trotted out of the cave with a nicker to Jensen. The sullen grullo looked up from where he lay under the shade of a large tree. Seeing where Percy was heading, he surged to his feet and ran to catch up, tail held out high behind him.
”Hello!” Perseus called out when the herd drew closer.
Two stallions separated themselves from the mares and trotted over, tossing their manes and high stepping.
”Hello. My name is Chinco and this is my second, Grindlewald. We’ve come in search of water. Most places are dried up.” the darker appaloosa, Chinco, said as he glanced up at the sun.
Percy eyed the two stallions and glanced behind them at their mares. They milled around, all of them eyeing the small river. Percy smiled and nodded his head.
”We have no claim to this river. Of course we can share.” he said diplomatically.
Percy heard Jensen grumble next to him and shouldered the older stallion as subtley as he could. Jensen glared at him briefly, but stayed quiet.
Chinco smiled and said, ”Thank you. It’s much appreciated.”
With that, the two stallions turned and returned to their mares. Some of them nickered happily before quickly heading for the water, giving the curious foals in the water some space. Despite the mares’ hesitance to mingle, three foals shot out from their ranks and dove hooves first into the water, joining in the general mayhem caused by Colden, Calida, and Arwyl. More than happy to have new faces to play with, all six foals chased each other round and round, yelling and laughing loudly with one another.
Percy smiled at the sight until he heard Arwyl cry out.
”Daddy! My hoof got stuck!” she whined loudly, tugging at one of her back legs that was apparently caught.
Percy quickly trotted down to and into the river, nosing the water where Arwyl’s leg was stuck. Just as he suspected, she’d managed to lodge it between two river stones. With one strong hoof, he moved the rocks and freed the young filly, who hooted in joy and immediately sent a deluge of water over his head. Percy laughed and kicked out, sending a mini wave after her in return. Apparently, the sight of a stallion playing water games with a foal relaxed both herds and the mares began to mingle with one another, some of them even leaving the cool comfort of the cave to join in the merriment.
Canary came waddling down to the river and drank deeply, keeping a shrewd eye on her two foals, lest they ambush her in her delicate state. Percy noticed that Jensen, of course, chose to keep himself distant from the others. With a wink at Arwyl, Percy left their game and went to have a more adult interaction, sparking up a conversation with Chinco as he milled around his mares.
The two herds stayed mixed together for the whole day, everyone enjoying the new company and shared water. As the sun began to set, the heat started to dissipate and Chinco bid his farewells. With a nicker, he gathered his mares and foals and moved off in the direction they had come from. Percy watched them go with a smile, glad that today had been peaceful and enjoyable.
He turned his attention to Robin, who was laying on the bank of the river, one of her legs dangling into the water.
”How is your leg feeling today?” Perseus asked.
”Mmm, better now that I’m letting it soak.” she replied with a smile. A glint lit up her eyes and she added, ”That Grindlewald sure was a looker.”
Percy snorted and rolled his eyes. ”If you’re that keen on him, I think you can still catch up.”
Robin laughed and stuck out her tongue in a childish manner, Percy sticking his out as well. Percy left Robin where she was and found a particularly green patch of grass to graze on. Pigeon, Finch, and Crane joined him and held light conversation. He couldn’t help but smile to himself.
Today had been a good day.
