Description It was a beautiful day.

The sun was shining, the breeze was cool, and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. After the thunderstorm a few nights ago, there was plenty of water in the once dry riverbed where Faramir’s herd was now lounging. Tristain, Mheetu, and Tempest were taking advantage of this fact by splashing and running through the clear water. They squealed with delight while they tussled, boxing at each other with their hooves and having a grand time.

Reese, Raphalia, Lyra, and Ariadne stood watching the foals play. Being the youngest mares, they still had some foal-ish tendencies and were envious. Reese and Raphtalia were too far into their pregnancies to be romping around and Ariadne and Lyra were standing with them through solidarity.

Sabriel waded into the water away from the playing foals. The water came up to just the bottom of her round stomach and she sighed happily. Windfola and Sif joined her, pawing at the water before dropping to their knees and rolling in the shallows.

”That looks like fun.” Finn said to Winona with a smile.

The perlino mare nodded in agreement and nudged Finn toward the water. The two mares trotted in laughing, tossing their heads playfully.

Faramir and Breigo watched the mares enjoying the day with peaceful expressions.

”What a day.” Faramir commented with a wide smile. ”Everyone is in such good moods.”

Breigo nodded and took a deep breath through his nose, enjoying the crisp autumn air. Aloine trotted up beside them and bumped into Breigo flirtatiously. Breigo smiled and nuzzled her and Faramir made an excuse to leave the two lovebirds to themselves. He wandered away toward a small cluster of mares.

Saoirse, Auri, and Zendaya stood together grazing and chatting. They raised their heads in acknowledgement of Faramir, but quickly went back to what they were doing. Faramir continued walking until he found Firefoot who was relaxing under the shade of a tree.

”How goes your morning, Firefoot?” Faramir asked.

”Oh, it goes alright.” the gelding said with a broad smile. ”Just finished my patrol and didn’t hear, see, or smell anything out of the ordinary.”

”Good, thank you.” Faramir said with a nod.

The day continued in much the same way as it had started. The mares relaxing, foals playing, and sun shining. Faramir was close to dozing off when a strange scent hit his nose. He looked up toward a hill and thought he could see the outline of a horse, but it was difficult because of the sun’s placement. He tilted his head and squinted his eyes. Now he thought he could see two other horse’s outlines as well.

Breigo came up beside him, nosing the air.

”They smell like mares but…” Breigo trailed off.

Faramir nodded. They smelled...off. Nodding at Breigo, the two stallions began to ascend the hill at a lope. As they drew closer, the mares darted away. Though strange, their scents were incredibly enticing. They followed the mares for a long while, always just out of reach. Soon they were descending down a steep embankment. Breigo and Faramir hesitated. With the recent rains, the embankment was muddy. Faramir took a tentative step before backing away. How had the mares gotten down there so quickly?

”It’s alright, we just have to be careful.” Breigo said with a reassuring smile.

Faramir nodded and the two stallions began to pick their way down. They could see the mares entering a forest at the bottom of the hill, fog licking at their hooves. Faramir had only a moment to think it was strange before he heard a shout from his right. His head whipped around in time to see Breigo fall to his knees, collapsing into the mud as he began to slide rapidly down.

”Breigo!” he cried, frozen.

The other stallion only seemed to gain more speed as he careened down to the side of the hill. His hooves kicked uselessly as he tried to regain his feet. He whinnied helplessly.

His cries were cut short as his head collided with a rock.

Faramir watched in shocked silence as Breigo finally came to a stop at the very bottom of the embankment.

”B-breigo?” he called softly.

No reply.

Faramir’s whole body shook. With one step and then another, he forced himself down. It took what felt like hours before he reached the bottom.

Breigo lay motionless in the mud, bright red blood pooling under his head.

Faramir approached, shivering pathetically. He bent his head down and nudged Breigo.

Nothing.

He tried again, harder this time.

Breigo gave no response.

Faramir’s breath started coming in ragged gasps. His whole body practically vibrated with how badly he was shaking. His head whipped around, looking for signs of anyone to help.

But there was no one.

”H-help.” he said, voice hoarse. He licked his dry lips.

”HELP!” he screamed.

But there was no one around who could hear him. Faramir fell to his knees beside Breigo’s body. He gasped and wept, sobbing piteously. He laid his head down on his friend and lost himself.

Breigo was dead.
