”Aunt Windfola?”
”Yes, Astarael?”
”What is that?”
Windfola looked up from where she was grazing and turned her attention to the young foal. He was standing in a small pond clogged with water-weeds. Currently he was peering down between his legs at a small green creature and Windfola couldn’t help but laugh.
”Looks like you’ve made a friend.” she chuckled. ”That’s a frog.”
Astarael wrinkled his nose and tilted his head. ”I don’t know if I want to be friends with a frog. Looks slimy.”
The young foal pawed at the water before jumping out of the pond and trotting a circle around his aunt.
”I’m bored.” he grumbled.
Windfola smiled and went back to nosing at the grass. ”Must be lonely being the only foal in the herd.” she said knowingly.
”It is! There’s never anyone to play with.” he sighed, kicking out his back legs in frustration.
”Well that will be changing soon.” Windfola said in a sing-song voice, nudging at her stomach with her soft nose.
Astarael’s ears pricked up and his eyes brightened. ”Wow, really? You’re gonna have a foal? That’s awesome! I’m gonna be a real big brother!” he squealed happily, racing in a tight circle.
Windfola smiled widely and said, ”It’s a lot of responsibility being a big brother. Are you sure you can handle it?”
”Yeah! Just wait, I’ll be the best big brother ever!” he shouted proudly, puffing out his chest. Then he looked down at the ground thoughtfully and said, ”Does dad know yet?”
Windfola shook her head. ”You’re the first to know. Why don’t you tell your dad for me? You can let him know you’re going to be a big brother soon.”
Astrarel’s smile and eyes widened. ”Wow, yeah! I’ll go find him right now!”
Without a backward glance, the colt was racing away with his tail held high, shouting at the top of his lungs.
