Description

”Tia, I really don’t think it’s a good idea to be on the ice…” Meara called out in worry.

Titania hummed to herself as she skated along on the slippery surface. ”Maybe it wouldn’t be safe for you, but I’m perfectly fine!” she called back in a singsong voice.

Meara’s ears drooped at Titania’s comment. It was true that she had gained a little weight in prep for winter but...not that much...right?

”Don’t listen to her.” Jarla snorted, stepping up beside her friend. ”You know how she is and she doesn’t mean it.”

”Yeah...you’re probably right…” Meara mumbled, looking down.

”We should be getting back to the others soon anyway. I think Breigo wanted to address the herd this afternoon.” Jarla added on with a nod.

Meanwhile, Titania still pranced across the ice, ignoring the other two mares trying to get her attention. She looked up and saw the cutest squirrel scurrying through a nearby tree. It’s ears had little tufts of fur on the ends and it’s tail was extra bushy. Distracted, she didn’t notice the ominous sound of cracking ice until it was too late. With a cut off scream, she plunged into the freezing water. Desperate, she kicked out her legs and burst through the water with a gasp.

”H-help me!” she cried out, floundering.

”Tia! I’m coming!” Meara yelled as she raced forward.

Titania scrabbled at the ice until she was finally able to pull herself up and out of the water. Laying there to gain her breath, she started to violently shiver as Mea came up beside her.

”Oh my goodness, are you alright?” Mea said as she slid up to her.

”D-d-do I LOOK alright to you?” Titania snapped, blue eyes piercing.

Meara took an uncertain step back before leaning down and pushing against Titania’s side to help her up. The other mare slipped a few times but was finally able to get her feet underneath her. Wordlessly, Titania leaned against Meara’s side as the two mares made it off the ice and back onto solid ground.  Jarla pressed against the champagne mare’s other side and together the three hurried back to where the herd was resting, leaving the frozen lake behind.

Upon their arrival, Aloine immediately noticed something was wrong. The lead mare loped over to them and gasped at Titania’s dripped features.

”What on earth were you thinking?” she bellowed. ”We’ve told everyone that the lakes around here aren’t frozen enough to be safe!

Titania’s ears flattened as she was chastised and she offered a mumbled apology. Meara was practically cowering under Aloine’s gaze as Jarla tried explaining what had happened.

”What is going on over here?” Breigo asked as he trotted forward, having noticed the commotion from far off. The other mares were also beginning to gather at the sounds of Aloine’s wrath.

”It-it was my fault!” Meara piped up, stepping forward and gulping as all eyes turned to her. ”I-I mentioned how pretty the lake looked frozen and how much fun it would be to go skating an-andI’msosorrypleaseforgiveme”

Breigo and Aloine shared a look that clearly said neither believed the young mare. But Breigo sighed and nodded, putting his neck over Meara’s.

”It’s alright. Titania will be fine, so new permanent damage has been done. Now let’s try to get her warmed up.” Breigo said with a smile.

Meara blushed fiercely and smiled wide. ”Y-yes, thank you! Come on Tia!”

Titania grumbled under her breath but followed behind Meara and Jarla as the three young mares made their way back into the main herd.

”Why did you lie to the lead mare and stallion?” Jarla asked disapprovingly. ”It was Tia’s idea to go on the ice and you know it.”

Meara shrugged, still smiling. ”I didn’t want Tia to get in trouble...again.”

”Hey! I don’t get in trouble that often! And I don’t need you to take the blame for me! I’m perfectly capable of taking care of myself.” Titania said haughtily, the effect ruined as she shivered and sneezed.

Once within the main herd, the three mares picked out a spot and all lay down close to one another, sharing body heat. Some of the other mares came over to them and asked what happened, though it was fairly obvious based on Titania’s appearance. Thankfully it was a relatively warm and sunny day, slowly drying Titania. Aloine came back to check on them, clucking her tongue and shaking her head at them. Tia glared at the lead mare once her back was turned and laid her head down on the snow, sniffling miserably.

”It’ll be alright, Tia.” Meara tried to say soothingly.

”Yeah, you probably won’t die of pneumonia from being an idiot.” Jarla added sardonically.

Titania growled under her breath and tried to ignore both of them, willing herself to be warmer and drier. Stupid squirrel she thought angrily as she drifted off to sleep.
