Description
Jensen’s breath hung in the chilly air around his muzzle, slowly dissipating into nothing. He looked up into the sky and blinked snowflakes off his eyelashes. Something didn’t feel right...and it wasn’t just the impending storm.
”What’s wrong? You’re broodier than normal.” Denna asked as she ambled toward him.
Jensen didn’t take his eyes off the darkening sky, ears perked and alert. Denna tilted her head, unused to seeing Jensen so serious.
”Gather the rest of the mares. I want to move.” Jensen told Denna, looking her square in the face.
Denna raised an eyebrow but for once didn’t question him. With a quick turn, she trotted back down the small hillock where Jensen stood, nickering out to the herd. Most of them were gathered in the clearing below and came quickly to Denna’s call. Jensen made his way down toward them, the feeling of unease only growing in his stomach as the snow fall became heavier.
”We’re moving for the day. Now.” Jensen told his gathered mares.
Worried glances were shared between many of the mares as they looked from Jensen to the sky and each other. It was unusual for him to move them after such a short time in one area, and even stranger that he chose to do so during a storm. Without another word, Jensen began to lead the way out into the valley, the mares all stepping up to follow.
The wind howled around his ears, forcing him to pin them to his head. His mane was whipped around his face and stung his eyes as he squinted against the near whiteout. He was vaguely aware of the mares speaking in hushed voices behind him. They probably thought he was acting crazy but he didn’t care.
Something wasn’t right.
Suddenly, dulled by the cacophony of the wind, he heard shouting. Jensen stopped and turned his head, ears straining to pick the sound up again. From over the hill came the shouts again just as four men on horseback appeared. Jensen’s ears immediately flattened against his skull as dread filled his belly.
”Run! Follow me and stay close!” Jensen cried.
In little less than a panic, the herd sprang into a gallop. Jensen pushed his legs to work faster in the deep snow, teeth gritted in a snarl. The yells and whoops from the men were growing louder. Jensen stole a glance back and saw the mares in a tight huddle behind him, fear plain on their faces because now they could hear the men, too.
It felt like they ran for hours. The wind screamed around them as the snow blinded them. And all the while, the men hollered behind like wolves on the hunt. Despite the cold, a lather of sweat was working its way across Jensen’s flanks. With another glance behind him, he could see some of the mares beginning to falter. He couldn’t call out to them as he ran and hoped they could keep going. They had to keep going.
Jensen blinked rapidly, trying to clear his eyes of the snow. He thought he could see something up ahead, but he couldn’t be sure. It almost looked like...a fence!! Too late, Jensen realized his mistake. Skidding, he tried to come to a stop. Some of the mares cried out behind him as they were forced into a halt. Jensen whirled around, but too late.
The trap was already closing around them. The men had caught up and were blocking their only escape. They’d been corralled into a pen with high walls, their only way out made impossible by the men. Jensen’s legs shook underneath him and he blamed the cold, pretending it wasn’t fear and exhaustion that caused him to shake.
The mares pushed toward him, trying to get as far away from the men as possible. The whites of their eyes shone plainly as they looked to Jensen some sort of guidance or comfort. Jensen looked back and could offer them nothing.
They were captured.

As the snowstorm continues, Ibis decides it would a great time to tell Jensen she's pregnant. At least Jenson was able to find some lush grass for her along the way.
