Description
”Where exactly are you taking me?” Anhinga asked for the fourth time in as many minutes. The flaxen stallion nipped at her rear again and she snapped a quick hoof out at him, missing.
”It doesn’t matter where we’re going.” the stallion grumbled. ”Just keep moving.”
”You know, my herd is gonna find us. They’re going to save me from your awful attitude and bad breath and you’ll be a lonely bachelor again.” Anhinga stated with a snort.
The stallion muttered something under his breath that Anhinga pretended not to hear. The two walked in silence for a while as the rain drizzled around them. The thunder storm had blown itself out hours ago thankfully. But Anhinga was still soaked to the bone and extremely cold. Her skin shivered as she walked and she wanted to try breaking into a run to warm up. But that stupid stallion would chase her down and bite at her and she was not in the mood.
She hoped Percy would hurry up already.
As they walked, Anhinga began to notice their surroundings. It was becoming foggy, her hooves nearly hidden from her view. They were approaching a strange forest that she couldn’t remember ever seeing before. It felt...eerie.
Anhinga stopped short when she heard...a giggle? She tossed her head around, looking for the source of the noise, and saw a small mare standing just inside the trees of the weird forest.
”Come this way.” the mare called in a high, sweet voice.
Anhinga’s ears pricked up in curiosity. Before she could say anything, the flaxen stallion interrupted as he also heard the mare calling.
”Come on, we’re going into the forest.” he said, shouldering Anhinga toward the woods.
”Are you crazy? Who knows what could be in there!” Anhinga yelled in a whisper, afraid to raise her voice.
”More mares, apparently.” the stallion said greedily.
Anhinga had no choice but to enter the forest. But as soon as they got close, the small mare darted away, deeper into the trees. Her voice was open and friendly, coy, as she called out to them to continue following her. Anhinga’s hair stood on end the further into the forest they went and she knew the whites of her eyes were showing terribly. She took deep breaths, trying to calm her racing heart, but it was no use. This forest felt wrong and she wanted to go home.
