Description

The thick, new grass hampered Percy as he ran through the forest, His thoughts racing with what had just happened. A lump was forming in his stomach, making him feel ill, but he still pushed on. He kept his head high as he ran, scenting the air, hoping not to catch the stench of human. After a while, he began to calm down, feeling more and more confident that no humans were in the forest. Caught up in searching for one scent, he almost missed the familiar smell of horses until he was right upon them. Skidding to a stop, he peered through the trees to see three stallions grazing in a meadow. As he stepped closer to take a better look, his hoof broke a stick, causing all three stallions to immediately look up at him.

”Show yourself, stranger.” called out he grey dappled male.

Gulping, Percy warily stepped out from his cover.

”H-hello.” he said with an attempted smile.

The three stallions regarded him curiously, clearly not worried about this young male in their midst.

”I was wondering...have any of you seen humans in these woods?” Percy asked after a moment’s hesitation.

Perseus knew he had to be careful. The last thing he needed was for these males to realize he had a herd deeper in the forest. Maybe, maybe, he could take on one of them. But three? No. He had to be very careful.

The three stallions exchanged glances and the black one shook his head. ”No. No humans around here that we know of. Why do you ask?” he responded.

Percy thought for a moment before saying, ”I’ve just left my birth herd behind...and I’m nervous.” he lied, trying to look worried.

The gray stallion nodded. ”That’s a reasonable concern.” he replied. His ears perked forward and he grinned. ”You may join us if you’d like. We have no mares, but that could change.”

Percy smiled, suddenly feeling bad for lying to these kind stallions. ”Thank you for the offer, truly. But I’d like to try being on my own for a while.”

The gray stallion nodded again and said, ”May the wind be ever at your back”

”And may your hooves never falter.” Perseus responded with a small bow.

Taking his leave, Percy circled away from the bachelor herd. He took an alternate route back to his new herd, just in case. As he came upon the mares again, they turned toward him hopefully.

”No humans?” asked Robin.

Percy shook his head with a small smile. ”No. You seem to have given them the slip.”

There was a huge sigh of relief among the mares and they all physically relaxed. A low groan drew their attention so the stream where Jensen was shakily getting to his feet. Water dripped off of his bruised coat back into the muddied water. He fixed Percy with a strange look, eying him up and down. Percy tried to stand straighter and hoped he didn’t look as shaken as he felt.

”Thank you...little brother.” the grullo stallion mumbled.

Percy’s chest flooded with warmth and he smiled broadly. Maybe this wouldn’t be so bad after all.
