Description
Breigo pawed anxiously at the ground. The wind was blowing in the wrong direction, whipping strands of mane into his face. He snorted in annoyance and shook his head more violently than necessary. He didn’t even notice when Windfola stepped up beside him until she spoke softly.
“She will be fine, Breigo.” the mare said warmly. “We will see her returning over the hill soon.”
Breigo sighed and leaned into Windfola’s soft side, her hair softer than rabbit’s fur.
“I know you’re right...probably...but I can’t help feeling this way. She’s been gone so long…” he admitted his worries, looking into her amber eyes.
Windfola wuffled air through her lips and nibbled at his chin. “Foal birth isn’t some simple puzzle to be planned and figured out. She’ll be back soon.” she repeated before turning and trotting back to graze with the two geldings.
Breigo sighed again and bent his head, sniffing at the cool, green grass without tasting it. And then a flash of movement caught his eye. His head snapped up in an instant and his eyes widened. As soon as he was certain of what he saw, he nickered loudly across the valley and raced across the hills. Corona was walking steadily toward him and whinnied back his greeting with just as much happiness. Breigo’s heart seized in his chest when he didn’t see a foal at her side.
Breigo huffed as he slowed to a trot and finally a walk as he immediately threw his head over Corona’s neck, causing her to laugh gently.
“I have missed you!” he cried, rubbing his head against her warm hide. “But…?”
Corona smiled and returned his warm nuzzle, stepping closer. “I haven’t been gone that long.” she said. “And stop your worries, your son is right behind me.”
“My...son…” Breigo’s jaw fell open with the words as he looked back down the hill and saw two more figures approaching.
A leggy colt pranced happily toward him, ears perked up and quivering. He was followed closely by a clearly pregnant mare, her stomach more swollen than a watermelon. But Breigo’s eyes locked onto his son and he stepped forward.
The colt immediately pinned his ears at the undivided attention and skittered behind his mother, hooves nearly tangling as he went.
“Now, now Astarael, that’s no way to greet your father.” Corona chided gently. “You’re a colt, not a mouse!”
The young horse gulped nervously, but stepped out from behind Corona, puffing out his chest as Breigo lowered his head to sniff at his short mane.
“So. Your name is Astarael. A large name for such a small thing.”tried to say solemnly, but he caught Corey’s eye and the pair tried not to giggle to each other.
“Y-yes sir.” Astarael replied. “I’m gonna grow into it. Just watch!”
Losing some of his shyness, Astarael reared up and play boxed with his father’s chest. Breigo laughed, completely dropped his serious facade.
“A little soldier!” he exclaimed proudly. “My, you’ll be in a class all your own when you’ve grown some.”
Astarael beamed at his father’s praise, tail flicking happily.
A firm “a-hem” caught Breigo’s attention and he finally turned to regard the pregnant mare. He bowed his head and said, “I apologize, my son seems to have distracted me from my manners. My name is Breigo and I am the stallion of--”
“Yes, yes. The stallion of Summer Stars. Corey has told me much about you.” the mare interrupted with a smirk.
“Ah. So you are already familiar with me.” Breigo said with a warm smile. “And what may I call you?”
“This is aunty Ashwyn!” Astarael piped up, prancing over to the mare. By the look she gave him, it was clear to Breigo that she was just as fond of him as he was with her. “She helped me and mommy when there were coyotes around!”
Breigo tried to keep himself from having an entire melt down. Coyotes...you don’t say…” he squeaked, trying to keep his breathing even.
Corona laughed in his face and nuzzled up under his chin again. “Relax, love. They were hardly a nuisance, Ash made sure of that.” she reassured him.
Ashwyn grinned proudly back at him. “And in return for this service, I ask a favor.” she wobbled over to them and stared at Breigo intently. “I intend to have a strong, healthy foal. But I need a herd to keep us safe. It seems my life has taken a different fork in the road than I intended and I’m in need of a stallion.”
Breigo tried to look strong and competent under her watchful gaze.
“So my favor is this. Allow me to join your herd and do what you must to keep both myself and my foal safe.”
Breigo bowed his head again replied, “Welcome to the herd of Summer Stars.”
“Great! Now that the formalities are out of the way, I would like to eat my weight in lush grasses and then have a long nap. I should be given a medal just for making it up this hill in my condition.” she muttered as she began to climb the hill leading to the rest of the herd.
“She’s a funny one.” Breigo commented to Corey, making sure to keep his voice quiet as they also climbed the hill.
“Oh, she’ll grow on you quickly.” Corona laughed as she bumped her nose against Astarael’s rump lovingly.
“I’m sure she will. Now let’s get this over with. Firefoot will want to hear all the gory details.” he said with a fake groan.
