Aloine couldn’t help but smile. The sun was shining brilliantly, the air smelled particularly sweet...and she was expecting! With a pep in her step that had been missing as of late, Aloine returned to the main herd. She was returning from the flower field where she had told Breigo that they were going to be parents and was preparing to tell the rest of the herd. But before she made it back, an all too familiar figure came into view. With a short snort of surprise, she drew herself up and came to a stop.

”My, my, you’re positively glowing.” Sabriel said in her usual deep tone. ”What has put you into such a good mood, my lady?”

Aloine forced a smile onto her face and replied lightly, ”Well, I was actually on my way to announce some good news to the rest of the herd.”

Sabriel’s brow quirked and she gave Aloine another once-over. ”Could my little one have a brother or sister on the way?” At seeing Aloine’s startled face, she smiled. ”Good news, indeed.”

”Yes. Well. It is good news.” Aloine said awkwardly as the mares fell into step together. ”We’ve been trying for...some time.”

”Yes, I know. Poor dear. I do hope the little one comes out healthy…” she trailed off.

Aloine’s ears swiveled as she tried to keep them from pinning. ”This won’t be my first foal. And dear Creasey will make sure we have all the berries we need.” she replied in a clipped tone.

”Of course, of course. Nothing to worry about at all.” Sabriel said with a sage nod.

By now they had reached the rest of the herd. Some of the mares looked up at their approach and nodded respectfully to the lead mare. Aloine couldn’t help but think that Sabriel seemed to be drinking in the attention meant for her. But when had “attention” mattered to her anyway? Aloine mentally shook herself out of her now soured mood. This was a happy day!

Coincidentally, Lirael, another expecting mother, approached the pair.

”My lady, Sabriel.” she greeted. ”Breigo came running through here not long ago looking positively giddy. Is everything alright?” she asked with a grin at Aloine.

”Yes, more than alright. We’re finally expecting.” Aloine raised her voice for the herd to hear.

Shocked, happy gasps echoed through the area as the mares rushed to Aloine’s side with shouts of congratulations. Aloine beamed at everyone and accepted their praise with nods and “thank yous”. She hardly even noticed when Sabriel slipped away from the group to go to where-ever it was she went. Aloine pushed her from her mind completely.

Today was a good day to have a good day.
