Description
Something in the air wasn’t right. He could smell it. And no matter what Aloine said, it wasn’t just his stomach or nerves. Breigo snorted and shook out his mane as he pawed restlessly at the ground.
”Does it have to be today?” he asked Aloine for the fifth or so time.
Aloine rolled her eyes and nuzzled at his cheek. ”Yes, it does.” she replied with a small laugh. ”It’s not like I’m choosing it to be today. I don’t have much say in it.”
Breigo noticed her wince and glanced worriedly at her bulging belly. He knew mares were smarter about these things than he’d ever be, but it was hard to let Aloine go off on her own when things felt so wrong. He raised his head and sniffed at the air again.
”You worry too much. Everything will be fine! Here, I’ll let you walk with me a little ways.” Aloine offered placatingly.
Breigo sighed and nodded. The pair set off on their own, leaving the small herd behind. Breigo knew he didn’t have to worry with the geldings keeping watch, but he still hated leaving his family.
They walked for a long time in silence, simply enjoying each other’s company. If he was being honest, Breigo would say he was sulking. He was so caught up in his thoughts that he almost didn’t notice the change in the wind.
Breigo stopped dead in his tracks with a snort and whirled around, ears perked forward. Aloine stopped as well, legs splayed apart as the whites in her eyes shown.
They came over the hill at a gallop and Breigo wondered how he had missed the thundering of their hooves. Men on horses hooted at the sight of them and spurred their steeds onward.
”Breigo…” Aloine whimpered, taking a step backwards.
”Aloine, run!” Breigo shouted, shouldering her out of her frozen fear.
Aloine blinked quickly before leaping into a gallop, Breigo close on her heels. The pair ran side by side as fast as they could but Breigo could hear the men gaining on them. It wasn’t long before Aloine was huffing and beginning to slow. The weight of the coming foal was just too much and Breigo knew they’d never be able to get away. Breigo grit his teeth and made a choice. With determined look he nipped at Aloine’s flank before skidding to a stop. Aloine threw a desperate look over her shoulder and seemed like she was about to stop when Breigo cried ”I’ll find you!” and turned back towards the men.
Breigo pelted toward the men and their horses, bursting through their middle and bucking savagely. The men hollered and reined in their horses, turning them quickly to follow the fleeing stallion. Breigo panted as he ran and he could feel the sweat dripping down his flanks. He couldn’t lead them back to the herd. He had to make sure he took them as far away from his family as possible.
But then he suddenly felt something tight around his neck and he was pulled up short. It felt like a ring of fire was around his neck and he choked painfully as he reared and screamed out his fury. With wild eyes, he saw the men had caught up to him and has lassoed a rope around his neck. He screamed again threw his head, trying to free himself. But it was no use. A second rope found purchase and he could no longer move in either direction. Flailing, he fell to the ground with a mighty thud and lay there quivering.
He was captured.
