Description
After months of harsh weather and bitter cold, the days were finally beginning to grow warm again. The snow had melted and brought new life to the plants around them as the sun returned. The Herd of Summer Stars felt as though they had come out of a long, restless sleep. Breigo, Thowra, and the geldings were off patrolling the territory while Sif and Aloine wandered among the mares, keeping order. Four foals played not far from the main herd, knowing they were supposed to keep within earshot of their mothers.
Chalcedony and Tamara boxed with each other, playing at being stallions, as they shouted childish insults back and forth. Robin and Perseus were playing a game of tag, racing circles around the sparring fillies. All four were having a grand time when one of the mares approached.
The foals stopped their games and stared at the strange mare. She had only joined the herd very recently and not much was known about her. Besides her odd appearance, she had a mysterious air about her that seemed to make others uncomfortable.
”Hello, children.” Sabriel said with a wide smile.
”Hello.” the foals all chorused together, shuffling their hooves.
”I have something I’d like to show you.” Sabriel said after a brief pause.
The foals exchanged glances between themselves. Yes, Sabriel was a member of the herd, but she was so new that they weren’t sure if she counted as an “aunt” yet. Could she be trusted?
”I’ll go with you.” Robin said with a shy grin as she stepped forward.
Perseus, always right behind his half-sister, also stepped forward. ”I’ll go, too.”
Chalcedony was about to answer when she heard her mother calling for her. With a hurried apology, she rushed back to the main herd. Tamara mumbled something before quickly following her.
Sabriel watched them go without comment before turning back to Percy and Robin. ”Well then. I suppose it’s just us.”
Without another word, she turned and began to head toward a nearby forest. Robin nudged Percy in the shoulder and the two foals began to follow the two-coated mare.
It seemed as though they were walking endlessly. Sabriel made no attempt to spark a conversation and the two foals were unsure if speaking was even allowed on this little trip. The sound of birdsong filled their heads as they walked deeper and deeper into the forest. The further from the herd they went, the more uneasy they began to feel. But Robin pushed forward without complaint and so Percy went along, though his ears were held back.
After a while, Percy finally worked up the courage to ask, ”Uhm, S-Sabriel? Is it much farther?”
Sabriel stopped and slowly turned her head to look over her shoulder at them. Her face seemed quizzical as she glanced around. ”I’m sure it can’t be too much farther…” she seemed to say to herself. With a shrug, she started walking again.
Percy and Robin looked at each other. Percy quickly shook his head, trying to wordlessly convince Robin to turn back. But Robin set her jaw and turned, trotting to catch up with the mare. Percy gulped, taking one more look back before hurrying after her.
The sun was beginning to set when Sabriel finally came to a stop with a quiet “Ah-ha!”.
”Ok children, here it is.” she said to the two foals, turning back to them. ”Try not to be afraid.”
Robin gently pushed Percy forward, her courage seeming to finally falter. Percy groaned softly before taking a shaky step forward and the another. He walked around Sabriel who gestured where to go with her head. Percy slowly came around a large tree and ran into...another foal!?
Percy jumped back with a startled sound, having bumped his nose on something and seeing another foal. His heart thundered in his chest as he looked at what scared him. It was shiny and tall and oddly shaped, with ripples like water. The forest around them was reflected but distorted on its surface. And in the middle, staring back at him was...himself? He took a step forward, head tilting, and the image did the same thing. But the closer he got to it, the funnier his image became. He was tall and skinny and then fat and short. His brows knit together in confusion and he finally turned to Sabriel.
”What...is it?” he asked, turning back to the strange object.
”It’s called a mirror.” Sabriel replied as Robin came around her to take a look for herself.
”A mirror? That sounds like a human thing.” Robin said.
”And it is.” Sabriel said with a nod. ”Humans use it to inspect themselves. But this one is very funny, is it not?”
Now Robin came to stand in front of the mirror as well and her image became ridiculously distorted, just like Percy’s. The filly giggled as she watched herself become different shapes in the mirror’s reflection. Percy smiled too, his heart finally returning to a normal rhythm.
After a little while, Sabriel said, ”Alright you two. It is time to return home. I don’t want your mothers worrying.”
The foals pouted for a moment but nodded and all three began making their way back to the herd.
”Why did you want to show us that?” Robin asked after a little while.
”To show you that not everything humans leave behind has to be frightening.” Sabriel said with a wink over her shoulder.
They continued the rest of the way back in silence and it was already dark by the time they made it home. Khione came racing up to them as soon as she saw them, clearly upset.
”And just WHERE have you been, young lady?” she asked Robin.
Robin’s ears flattened and she replied, ”I was with Sabriel and Percy.”
Khione took a deep breath and shot a glare at Sabriel who smiled serenely back. ”You need to tell me next time you decide to go wandering.” she finally said with a sigh. ”Now come along. It’s time for sleep.”
Robin bid goodnight to Sabriel and Percy before following her mother. Percy looked around hopefully for his own mother, half hoping she’d come storming up to him as well. But from the looks of it, she was already asleep. Percy sighed and turned to Sabriel, who was watching him closely.
”Thanks for showing us the mirror today.” he said with a lopsided smile.
Sabriel bent her neck and nuzzled at Percy’s cheek, much to his surprise. ”Get some sleep, little colt. More adventures await you on the morrow.”
Without another word, Sabriel melted back into the herd. Percy watched her go before making his way over to his sleeping mother. Titania grumbled in her sleep as Percy settled down near her. Laying his head down, Percy’s eyes began to droop steadily shut as he was whisked away by his dreams.
