Description An rp between myself and warpugs featuring our character's Riley and Shep for .
*Note* This takes place BEFORE Grey mysteriously disappeared. Riley doesn't know he's gone yet.

Riley slowly made her way through a field lightly covered in snow. Small wisps were trailing into the air as the morning sun began to warm the earth. She licked at the frost covered plants, desperate for some fresh water to cool her aching throat. It had been nearly three days since she'd left the junkyard to carry out Grey's task. She'd trekked through the surrounding woods, never coming into full contact with any coyotes, but they harried her at night when she tried to sleep and knew they were watching. Eventually she'd wandered into Farm territory for a reprieve, hoping to catch an easy meal and rest away from hungry, prying eyes.

Lifting her nose she tested the air, catching scents of farm animals as well as a few dogs. She snorted and couldn't hold in a high pitched yawn. Her stomach growled, spurring her faster through the field. She surveyed the area, ears perking up at the sight of a chicken coop. Her tail wagged at the thought of nice, warm poultry before her body stiffened at the scent of another dog. Riley's lip curled but she turned and slunk a little ways off, pushing herself through some tall grasses and curling in on herself. She doubted her hiding place would go unnoticed, but even a few seconds rest seemed beneficial.

----------
warpugs said the following:

Shep was performing an early morning patrol of his farm, treading quietly through the snow with ears cupped forward and eyes and nose alert for anything out of the ordinary. Everything was going the same as usual as he passed the barns that housed the cows, horses, and resident pig on his farm, but as he neared the chicken coop he caught a strong scent. His eyes narrowed slightly as his nose twitched and he padded forward, stopping a few paces from the grasses that were near the coop. It was definitely another dog, and he thought they smelled faintly of the scent he had smelled on other dogs of the junkyard faction.

"Who's there?" His voice boomed into the quiet cold morning air, his tail held high in the air and his hackles raised uncertainly. He cautiously eyed the tall grasses, eyes narrowing again.

----------
sourlemonfox said the following:

Riley grumbled when the other dog called out. She was too tired to deal with this. With a sigh she slunk out of the grasses and peered at the other dog through narrowed, weary eyes.

"Just me." she replied, taking several steps out of her grass nest. "Don't worry, I'm not here to eat your humans." she assured sarcastically.

----------
warpugs said the following:

Shep tensed as the dog emerged from the grasses but as she spoke he relaxed. She seemed very tired, as if she had been traveling for a few days. Clearly she was trying to rest, but he was curious as to why a junkyard dog would be out on the farms.

"What are you doing out here then?" He questioned, his tone more curious than demanding.

----------
sourlemonfox said the following:

"That's hardly any of your business." Riley growled, an automatic response. She mentally chided herself. She was too tired to fight and would rather not be chased away from the relative safety of this farm back to the forest and coyotes. Visibly uncomfortable she tried again, more than a little awkwardly, "Uh, yeah, sorry. Uhm. Travel."

She looked away from the dog, embarrassed by how lowly she was acting. With another glance at the dog she attempted conversation, voice halting. "This is...your farm...?"

----------
warpugs said the following:

Shep's hackles raised again at her growling and initial response. He was about to respond similarly when she calmed down. He shifted his weight, watching the female. "Yes it is." He responded calmly, not taking his suspicious gaze off of her.

"You're from the junkyard?" The way he said it made it almost more like a statement than a question and he raised a brow. She was not as well fed as any pet and definitely wasn't another farm dog, so it was easy to come to the conclusion through that and the faint scent he caught that she was a junkyard dog. What on earth she was doing on his farm, he wasn't sure but would definitely find out.

----------
sourlemonfox said the following:

"It's...nice." her voice was flat as she looked around, the scents and sounds of the farm coming to life as the morning grew warmer. Her nose wrinkled, unused to the stink of farm animals as she was to the junkyard.

She looked back at Shep with an annoyed expression. "You really have to ask where I'm from? Figured it'd be pretty obvious I'm not one of your's or some pampered little priss."

----------
warpugs said the following:

"And that still leaves the strays who don't reside in the junkyard." Shep's eyes narrowed, not liking the tone she was taking with him when she was the one trespassing on his territory. It was an innocent question and there was no need for her to take such offense.

"I think it's about time for you to leave then." He spoke simply yet firmly. Unless she could change her tune, he wouldn't allow her to stay on his farm any longer. Shep didn't like to mess around and didn't want this to cut into his work day.

----------
sourlemonfox said the following:

"Look, I'm not causing any trouble." she refused to plead but she also felt like she would drop any minute. "I...just need a little rest."

She took a deep breath and continued, "Sorry I snapped at you. It was rude."

----------
warpugs said the following:

Shep eyed her for a moment longer before giving her a smile. He gave her a simple nod as an acceptance to her apology, seeing that it seemed to be a difficult thing for her to do. "Well, you can rest in the horse barn if you'd like." He offered. There was a section that contained hay bales and loose hay that made fine bedding, at least Shep and the farm cats thought so. "My people already turned out the horses so they won't be in that barn until much later."

He turned and walked a few paces before looking back to see if the female was following.

----------
sourlemonfox said the following:

Riley gaped at the dog's kind offer. "Just like that...? Really?" her lips twitched in a half grin, thinking any second the dog would laugh and tell her his offer had been a joke. But he didn't. She eyed him wearily, taken completely off guard by his easily given hospitality. She took a few slow steps after him when he turned to walk away, her ears perked and face still obviously confused.

----------
warpugs said the following:

Shep, still looking at her over his shoulder, tilted his head to the side. "Yeah, c'mon." He blinked. Were the junkyard dogs not this hospitable to each other? Or was she just surprised that he would be so kind to a dog from another faction? Shep always liked to help those in need, especially if it didn't harm him or his farm. Of course while she was there he would be sure to keep watch on her as he would any stranger he lets stay on his farm.

Shep entered the barn and turned to face Riley. Beside them were stacks of hay and lots of loose hay. He gestured his head towards the hay before sitting down.

----------
sourlemonfox said the following:

Riley followed Shep slowly, fur bristling at any unknown sound. Before she entered the bar she craned her neck to look all around the inside, nose twitching as she tried to find any suspicious scent. It was another long moment before she finally stepped over the threshold, tail nearly tucked between her back legs, too distracted by her paranoia to seem more confidant. As she walked by Shep she looked at him shrewdly and quizzically, trying to understand his motives.

She pawed at the hay before awkwardly sitting, still looking around, ears twitching at every sound. "This is uhm nice or...something...uh. Thank...you..." she coughed awkwardly and looked away in an attempt to hide her social ineptitude.

----------
warpugs said the following:

Shep watched her with his brows raised and a smile. He gave a short, hearty laugh and scratched at his ear with a hind leg. "You hungry?" He straightened up again, ears cupped forward awaiting her response. In the winter his owners liked to feed him heavier meals, filled with their farm-raised meats and veggies, as he never spent any time in the farm house with them, much preferring sleeping in the barns so he could easily patrol at night. He often wouldn't finish the meal in one sitting, usually spreading it out throughout the day, but he was willing to share with this stranger if she was indeed hungry. He could always steal some dog biscuits from the treat bin.

----------
sourlemonfox said the following:

Riley stopped pretending to be anything other than incredulous and openly gaped at him with narrowed eyes. "You would share your food. With me." she said slowly, making sure she understood. She gave a bark of laughter before looking back at him with untrusting eyes. "You don't even know me. I could be a thief. Or a killer."

She shook her head at him, ears plastered flat against her skull. "Why are you being so kind to me?"

----------
warpugs said the following:

"Got plenty." Shep shrugged, cocking his head to the side.

It was true, she could be those things, and that was why the farm dogs were generally supposed to avoid fraternizing with other factions. He was kind of breaking that rule here, which made him uncomfortable as he always tried to follow the rules, but she had stumbled onto his land and didn't seem to pose a threat so he felt no reason to aggressively send her packing. Besides, if worse really came to worse he could also easily howl for backup from his siblings and mother.

"Just in a farm dogs nature I suppose." He finally responded. "Being hospitable to others or those in need." He sat in silence for a moment longer before finally saying, "So are you hungry or not?"

----------
sourlemonfox said the following:

"I...uhm that is...yes, please." Riley replied, voice low, as she finally stopped her glaring and turned away to hide her embarrassment. "As long as you won't miss it." she muttered as an after thought. She pawed at the hay again, pushing and pulling the strands into a luxurious and warm bed. She ached to lie down and let her worries fall away but her stomach howled again so she held herself back, trying to get her running thoughts in order.

----------
warpugs said the following:

Shep rose to his feet and padded to the back of the barn to find his bowl, as the horse barn was where his Old Man had fed him earlier that morning. He pulled a slab of meat out of the bowl and padded back to the female, tossing it to her so it landed at her paws. He sat down again, looking out the door of the barn to the rest of his farm before back to the female again. "I'm Shep."

----------
sourlemonfox said the following:

Riley fell upon the offered meat with a fervor, jaws snapping making quick work of the juicy meal. Within seconds it was entirely devoured and she was licking her chops in contentment, almost humming with pleasure. But she finally remembered where she was and quickly sat back up to attention, ears flat against her head again as she avoided the male's--Shep's--eyes. "Riley." she finally managed in a quiet tone, looking down at her paws. "Thank you...Shep."

----------
warpugs said the following:

Shep dipped his head towards her in acknowledgement of her thank you. "So will I ever get to know why you ventured out here?" He questioned a bit hopefully. He had fed her and given her a place to rest, he felt it was only fair that she at least share this bit of information with him. Or so he hoped!

----------
sourlemonfox said the following:

Riley considered Shep for a moment before sighing and grumbling to herself. "I guess it doesn't really matter if I tell you." she mumbled to herself before saying, "I'm on a task for Grey, the junkyard boss."

She arched her back and reached with her legs in a cat-like stretch, tail swooping through the hay to cover her paws. "I have to find and kill the coyote pack leader."

----------
warpugs said the following:

Shep's ears perked forward and his brows raised as he nodded slowly. "Huh." He supposed he shouldn't ask why exactly she had to do it and he didn't care to know much about their pack politics. He didn't particularly like the coyotes, they were nuisance creatures to farm life. "Well, good luck." He said with a nod. "I see him with some other coyotes frequently at night in the woods across the street from here." They would just stand and watch from the safety of the woods. At least that was all they did for now. He knew they were just waiting for him to let his guard down so they could steal chickens or ducks or even one of the barn cats.

----------
sourlemonfox said the following:

Riley laughed with a lopsided grin. "Then I guess killing him will complete my task and pay you back for your hospitality all in one." she replied, feeling surprisingly pleased by that.

She looked at Shep thoughtfully with a titled head before saying slowly, "I really do appreciate how nice you've been. It's...nice."

----------
warpugs said the following:

"I definitely wouldn't be upset if a few of them just... disappeared." Shep grinned. He rose to his feet again, deciding it was time for him to get back to work.

"Ah, no problem." He responded nonchalantly. He turned to leave but stopped. "It was nice meeting you, by the way."

----------
sourlemonfox said the following:

"It was nice meeting you, too." Riley replied, speech still stinted and awkward. It had been a while since she'd used her manners. With another long stretch she finally settled herself down into the hay, unabashedly burrowing in to really get warm. She watched Shep with one half lidded eye as he left and her lips twitched.
