Description A roleplay between and featuring our characters Blue and Shep for .

Blue tossed and turned where she was laying on the porch in warm sunshine, eyes squeezed tightly shut. With a high pitched yelp she finally woke up, body shaking and legs trembling. One of her people cooed to her comfortingly, reaching out for her, but Blue threw herself off the porch and quickly loped away toward the pastures, fur standing on end as she panted erratically, stress and panic threatening to overcome her. Suddenly she dropped onto her stomach in the grasses and covered her eyes with her paws, curling tightly around herself as she slowly calmed down.

Shep's work was finished early for the day. It was an odd feeling, but when the farm was in between crop rotations and they didn't have much use for the animals during that time, he understood and took some time to himself. He didn't have very many friends that he could visit, as he could only see Riley if she came to him, so he decided to visit his dear friend Blue and see what she was up to.

He loped through the fields, enjoying the warm Spring air and the blooming wildflowers all around him, even enjoying the buzzing of bugs that seemed to have suddenly awoken overnight. He reached Blue's farm and slowed his pace, testing the air for her scent. Of course it was everywhere amongst the bizarre scents of the animals that resided on her farm, but he chose the strongest scent and followed it.

He sniffed through the tall grasses of the pastures on her farm and found himself almost stumbling over her once he did find her. She was curled tightly around herself with her paws over her eyes and the sight alone made him jump back in alarm. "Blue? What's wrong?"

----------
sourlemonfox said the following:

Blue was lost in her own head when she heard Shep say her name, making her jump and whirl around. She looked up at him with wide eyes and had to remind herself when and where she was, really. "O-oh. Hello, Shep." she said shakily, forcing a quivering smile.

Her skin felt hot and flushed under her fur, both from the panic and her embarrassment at being found in such a state. She glanced away from him, hunching her shoulders and sitting back down, tail squished underneath between her legs.

----------
warpugs said the following:

Shep tilted his head to the side, brows furrowing in confusion. He had never seen Blue in such a state before. Usually she was very happy-go-lucky. This... this was not the Blue he knew and it concerned him.

"What's wrong?" He repeated as, although she had greeted him, her behavior was still incredibly off from her norm.

----------
sourlemonfox said the following:

Blue sniveled and cast her eyes down, unable look at Shep. "I just...I had a nightmare. That's all." she said quickly, eyes darting up and back as her ears pinned against her head. She'd always been a terrible liar and she'd never wanted to lie in the first place, especially to Shep. But she couldn't possibly tell him what was actually causing her to feel so scared.

----------
warpugs said the following:

Shep's head continued to remain cocked to the side even after she responded. "Oh." He said, wondering if he should push this further. What were you supposed to say at times like these? He wasn't very good at this. "Do you... want to talk about it...?" His tone was uncertain and he squinted his eyes, head lowering a bit. No, he most certainly was not good at this.

----------
sourlemonfox said the following:

Blue looked up at him again, mouth already open to tell him everything. But the words caught in her throat and made her choke. She coughed once and swallowed hard, determined not to let the panic overtake her, especially not in front of another dog...especially not in front of Shep.

After a few shaky, whistling breaths, she looked back up to Shep with sad eyes and muttered, "You wouldn't like me anymore if I told you."

----------
warpugs said the following:

Shep had to stop himself from laughing at her response. Instead, he gave a snort. "Wouldn't like you anymore?" If she could forgive him over the way he reacted to his mother's injuries, surely whatever she had a nightmare about wouldn't bother him. What could be so bad? "I doubt it." He sat down in the tall grass of the pasture, waiting to hear what she had to say.

----------
sourlemonfox said the following:

Blue's entire body began to tremble, starting with her legs and running up her body into her face where her lips quivered and she tried to hold back the steady, high pitched whine. Her thoughts were racing too fast for her to understand and she knew she couldn't stop the truth from coming out.

"I've had a lot of puppies with a lot of different dogs!" she finally blurted out in a jumbled mess, yelling the words to get their foul taste off her tongue. She whined freely now and hunched over into herself, covering her face with a paw as her body was wracked cries. "I didn't want to!" she croaked to the ground between whines and hiccups.

----------
warpugs said the following:

Shep blinked and drew his head back in surprise, taken aback by this new information. Now he really wasn't sure what to say. He glanced around as he processed everything. It was a terrible thing to hear, because of what happened to her, but it certainly wasn't something to dislike someone for. He raised his paw and placed it at her shoulder in an attempt to comfort her because words were clearly failing him, giving her a warm sympathetic look.

Finally he said something, something simple but meant a lot from him, and another thing he had planned on since before arriving. "It's okay. Would you like to go for a walk to the creek?" He couldn't take back what happened, but maybe they could do something to help ease her mind.

----------
sourlemonfox said the following:

Blue waited for him to yell in disgust or to run as far away from her as possible. But instead she jumped when he placed a paw on her shoulder and spoke comfortingly. She slowly looked up at him, wondering why he hadn't left her yet.

"A walk? To the...creek?" she stuttered, sniffling gently. "With you? Yeah....ok."

She stood up carefully, looking at him with a scrunched brow and titled head. "You aren't...I dunno...upset with me?"

----------
warpugs said the following:

Shep nodded and turned, heading towards the woods that would take them to the creek. "Why would I be?" He glanced back at Blue with a raised brow. Sometimes he found himself understanding females less and less.

He was glad the sun was shining brightly, keeping the air warm, and making it perfect weather to enjoy the cold water at the creek. He entered the woods and followed along a path that the deer had cleared in the brush until the sound of water could be heard. He followed the creek until he reached a spot where the water seemed so calm one wouldn't be sure if it was really flowing or stagnant. The bottom of the creek was mostly covered in rocks as he dipped his paws in and walked around in the shallows, lapping up water as he went before he turned to look at Blue.

----------
sourlemonfox said the following:

Blue followed closely behind, steps uncertain at first but falling into her natural rhythm as they moved through the trees. "I don't know...for not telling the truth, I guess..." she mumbled in response to his question. She'd had her head down as they traveled and nearly jumped out of her skin when her paws touched cool water.

Blinking through her initial shock, she followed Shep's example and lapped at the clear water, loving the way it felt on her tongue and even the way it made her teeth ache, just a little. "This place is really beautiful." she finally said, a small smile on her face as she looked up at the canopy.

----------
warpugs said the following:

Shep blinked. "You just did tell the truth."

He lapped up some more water as he splashed about in the shallows, dampening his legs and undersides. At her comment he stopped and looked around before nodding in agreement. "Yeah, I s'pose it is." Smiling, he waded towards the center of the creek, allowing the water to rise up to his sides. "Refreshing, too." His tail wagged gently, inadvertently spraying water in Blue's direction.

----------
sourlemonfox said the following:

"Earlier I mean." she clarified, avoiding his eyes as she nosed through the cool water. There were some very lovely rocks glittering just under the surface that had caught her attention.

She yipped in surprise when Shep splashed her with water and began to laugh despite her unhappy thoughts. With a wag of her tail she bounced forward and send a tiny wave Shep's way, slipping on the rocks and tumbling face first into the water. Blue came up spluttering and laughing, coughing as she swallowed water while she splashed.

----------
warpugs said the following:

Shep let the small wave she sent his way wash up his sides, enjoying the cool water on his flanks. Blue quickly took a tumble head-first into the water and he couldn't help but laugh, tail wagging faster behind him. She resurfaced and the sight of her sopping wet caused him to laugh harder. He would have apologized, feeling rude, but he saw that she was laughing too and so he relaxed. "Real smooth." It was a nice change from the somberness between them earlier.

A large fly buzzed past his head and he snapped at it before wading into deeper waters.
Deeper and deeper until he was actually swimming, paddling his feet and looking quite at home in the water. He smiled over at Blue, encouraging her to join him.

----------
sourlemonfox said the following:

"Oh, I'm the smoothest." Blue said proudly, tail wagging behind her in the water.

Her head cocked to the side as he waded further out until he was swimming. She was surprised to realize she'd never actually swam before. She'd be living on the farm for a while now and hadn't ever tried it. Did she even know how? Her ears twitched with anxiety but she took a calming breath and trotted after Shep.

Once her feet couldn't reach the bottom she gave a small yelp of surprise and began to frantically kick her legs. Her head remained above water and she glanced at Shep nervously as she spastically paddled.

----------
warpugs said the following:

The late afternoon sun was shining high in the sky, but the air still remained warm. Shep watched Blue with a smile, excited to see she was joining in on his swim. He couldn't help but once again laugh as she spastically paddled through the deeper water. He didn't think he'd ever met a farm dog that didn't know how to swim. "Calm down. It should come naturally to you. The humans call it the doggy-paddle after all." He paddled around her, hoping to better demonstrate for her what to do.

----------
sourlemonfox said the following:

Blue focused all her energy and concentration on controlling her spastic movements, forcing them to become more rhythmic. Slowly she began to get the hang out it and started paddling with more confidence. Her tail rose out of the water and waved behind her like a soggy banner.

"This is so much fun!" she yipped excitedly, slowly making her way back towards Shep.

----------
warpugs said the following:

Shep watched, still paddling himself, as she slowly began to get the hang of swimming. He smiled as she finally got it. "There you go!" He had to agree with her. Swimming was one of his favorite things to do on the warmer days of Spring and Summer. He moved closer to the bank to a spot where his paws could reach the rock-covered bottom to have a moment to rest. Heaving a sigh, he plopped down in the water with a small splash and watched her swim some more before looking up to the tree tops as the leaves rustled in a gentle breeze that was sweeping through.

----------
sourlemonfox said the following:

Blue splashed around for a little longer before following Shep back into the shallows. "Thanks for bringing me here today." she sighed happily as she sat down close to him, ears perking up at the sound the wind made in the leaves.

----------
warpugs said the following:

Shep glanced down to Blue with a smile as she sat beside him in the shallows. "You looked like you needed some fun." He spoke simply. Swimming was usually what he did to unwind and he was glad to share something new with her from his own life.

----------
sourlemonfox said the following:

Blue smiled up happily at Shep, tail waving placidly behind her. Birds were singing in the trees and the sun sent shadowed dapples dancing all around them. She sighed blissfully, all the stress and anxiety of earlier completely washed away. Without a second thought she leaned her head lovingly into Shep, nuzzling her nose into his fur. Yes, everything was going to be alright.
