Description
A role play between my character Skunk and Quailmix's Gregor forSkunk's face scrunched as she glared determinedly at the snow covered ground. Oden was out on patrol as a newly made Scout and Skunk hadn't worked up the nerve to ask if she could come along. So now she stood completely motionless in a small clearing apparently having a staring contest with no one.
Her ears suddenly twitched forward and with a yip she dove her face through the snow, eyes closed tightly as she repeatedly snapped her jaws, catching nothing but snow, snow, and more snow. With a cough and sneeze she violently shook her head and neck, sending clouds of snow in all directions. She sniffled and sighed, sitting back heavily on her haunches in disappointment.
Gregor had been watching his young pack mate Skunk from the sidelines. So far, they hadn't interacted much, but they were cordial with one another. It was fairly common for the lower ranking wolves of his pack to avoid him, as much as he wished to be seen as less intimidating. In some sense it was a good thing to be seen as such an authority, although he did feel like the fear was unwarranted.
After many failed attempts on her part, Gregor decided perhaps Skunk would appreciate a few tips. He trotted her way, "Slow down," He called to her, taking a seat a bit far away from her to give her space to practice, "Wait, listen, you can hear where the burrows are if you are patient enough." He explained, "You can hear the direction they are moving if you listen."
Skunk's fur bristling in shock as Gregor made his appearance. She's been so focused on the task at hand she hadn't noticed he was near by. She turned toward him with hunched shoulders and lowered ears, bowing her head. "H-hello Alpha Gregor!" she stammered out, avoiding eye contact. Her ears perked forward as she realized he was giving her tips. With a hesitant glance at the ground she said, "I've been trying to listen for them, but they always seem to disappear at the last moment." She sighed and wrinkled her nose at the snow. She looked back over at Gregor with an apologetic look and said, "I want to become a better hunter so I can help provide for the pack. Everyone has been so kind to me here...I want to be able to do something useful."
Gregor nodded at her words, "That is very admirable of you, Skunk." He told her with a smile, happy to hear that she would like to be giving back to the pack. He took a few steppes towards her, "Come on then, try again." He encouraged, walking up next to her.
His own ears perked as he looked down at the snow, "Now, listen." He said quietly, "Can you hear them?" He glanced at the younger female, watching to see if she had picked up, "When you pounce, jump towards the direction they are moving in, not at the spot which you can hear they are at." He instructed, and waited for her to try.
Skunk listened intensely to Gregor and nodded determinedly. "Ok, sir. I'll try." she announced with a deep breath. Her large ears quivered with Skunk's intensity, her bright blue eyes narrowed as she focused all of her concentration. At the first few sounds of a small animal under the snow her back legs twitched with the desire to pounce but she kept steady. Thinking of what Gregor told her to switched her attention slightly more to the left, held her breath, and dove.
Snow went into her nose and made her eyes water as she shoved her snout around. With a push from her legs she dislodged herself from the snow and turned excitedly to Gregor, tail wagging happily. "Did I get it? I think I got it!" she muffled through a mouth full of snow and vole, crossing her eyes in an attempt to see her prey. The animal was on the smaller side and would hardly make more than a snack, but she had caught it herself!
Gregor smiled at her determination, and waited patiently for her to get a good idea of where the vole was hiding. Finally, she pounced, and Gregor watched intently to see if she had gotten her prize. At her excitement, he wagged his tail just slightly. He wasn't much of a wagger, but some instances deserved one.
"Yes, you've got it!" He told her with a light chuckle. "Well done." he congratulated her, sitting down in the snow in the same spot he had been standing.
Skunk plopped herself down happily next to Gregor and gingerly laid the vole at her feet. Looking back up at him sheepishly she said shyly, "Sir, I'd like you to have it. I couldn't have caught it without your help."
She felt immensely proud at finally catching her own prey. And in front of the alpha no less! It hardly mattered to her that it was only a small vole. She knew it would be the first of many she would provide for the wolves of Kausen--her home.
At her offer, Gregor hesitated slightly. He wanted to tell her to take it for herself, it was her first catch, and that deserved eating. Although at the same time he could see how important it was to her. To give an offering to the alpha of the pack usually was important to any wolf. If the situation was reversed, Gregor would want his alpha to have it as well.
So, he nodded, "Thank you, Skunk." He said with a smile, reaching down and gingerly picking up the vole. With one flip of his head, it was gone down his throat.
"You will make a fine hunter soon." He told her.
Skunk's heart swelled with pride at her alpha's words. For the first time in longer than she cared to remember she felt like she was truly at home. The ache she felt for her lost family still lingered but the warmth of this new realization made it feel less raw.
"Thank you, sir." she beamed at Gregor with a wide smile. "And, uhm, please...call me Miela."
