A role play for between and Characters featured are Rikki and Evita.

Evita was staring up at a blankly gray sky, a chilling wind ruffling through her fur. She was standing at the top of a hill near a wooded area, her stance rigid despite the tall grass tickling against her legs in the wind. Her eyes swept quickly over the field below, then to the line of trees surrounding it. The leaves were beginning to change to beautiful autumn hues but her eyes didn't linger on them for long. She glanced behind her, almost worryingly so, before loping down the hill and into the woods. Once in the woods she slowed her pace a bit to navigate between the trees, feeling a bit calmer in this darker area but still looking a bit frantic. One could tell she had not been on that hill long as her breathing was a bit ragged as well. Her ears swiveled in any direction she heard noise and her nose twitched as it caught all the different scents of the woods.

Rikki threw his head back and chomped down the last of the rabbit he had caught. Now that his leg was healed he was back in top condition and gaining back the weight he has lost. His coat was cleaner and no longer covered in burs and his mood was much improved with a few good meals. Blood dripped from his muzzle to stain the fur on his face and neck. With a yawn and stretch he shook out his fur, trotting away with his tail raised and waving in the air. His ears perked up and his nose twitched as he caught a familiar scent. With tongue lolling he broke into a lope to chase the scent, in too good a mood to miss a chance to see the only wolf he considered a friend. While running he threw his head back and let out a strange mix between a bark and howl, announcing himself.

Evita was still doing a jittery trot between the trees when she heard the strange howl. At first she jumped in a panic, tripping over a moss covered log but recovering smoothly and gathering herself despite it. Her heart calmed a bit as she believed she recognized who the howl belonged to. She gave a quick half smile and slowed to a stop as she awaited to see if Rikki would arrive. She attempted to calm herself as this really was not the way for her to normally react to anything. She was normally very outgoing and relaxed without much a care in the world but something had her uneasy. She eyed her surroundings before looking in the direction the howl had come from.

Once Rikki saw Evita he puffed out his chest and held his head and tail high. He trotted up to her, showing off how well his newly healed leg obeyed him. He circled her once before stopping in front of her, looking down with a devilish grin. By way of greeting he lifted a front leg and pawed gently at her face, smudging the fur on her head with dirt. He titled his head to the side as he felt something...off. He hadn't known Evita long but she was acting less than herself.

Evita watched him circle her with an amused grin on her muzzle, brow raised. She could feel some of her nervous energy begin to melt away until he lifted his paw. She froze and stiffened for a split second as his paw smeared dirt across her head and she again tried to regain some normality about herself. Normally she'd spout some sort of 'Lookin' good, stud!' joke but she didn't feel quite up to that level of cool and collected yet. "I see your leg has healed." She glanced from his leg to him and put on her amused smile again.

"Why are you being weird?" Rikki asked, confused. He noticed her flinch when he pawed at her and bent his neck to sniff at her. Any showing off he had intended was pushed aside by something akin to concern. He didn't want to name it so, but her body language and attitude were unsettling him. In an attempt to make her feel better he hunched his shoulder and crouched, trying to appear smaller. It probably didn't work very well.

"I'm not being weird." Evita responded quickly, almost in a bit of a huff, straightening herself and raising her head. As she thought a bit longer about how she was coming across she slowly relaxed, a bit embarrassed. Perhaps she had been overreacting this whole time. "It's nothing. I'm just being silly or dramatic or something." She tilted her head to the side as he hunched over. "Now I do believe you're the one being weird." She joked with a snort.

Rikki huffed and snorted at her quick response. "Yeah, you are being weird. Usually you're really annoying and now you're quiet." he said matter-of-factly, not even meaning to insult her. Resolutely he leant down and nipped one of her ears into his mouth, holding it firmly but not painfully. "Ahm nawt letting ger until yer tell mer whats werng." he grumbled out awkwardly. This was how you showed you cared for a friend, right?

Evita pulled away from him in shock at his response, an appalled expression on her face as her eyes narrowed and her mouth opened to protest. Before she could respond he had grabbed her ear and she huffed again, relenting.
"I've just... had a very off morning..." She responded slowly and carefully, looking away from him. She wasn't quite comfortable enough yet to share more information. She began to pull away from him but he was still holding onto her ear so she couldn't get far and she looked to the ground, studying the patterns in the dirt and moss.

Rikki nibbled lightly on her ear, trying to think of what could have happened to upset her so much. Finally get let go, leaving one ear noticeably soggier than the other. "Squirrel get away or somethin'? Anyone would be upset on an empty stomach." he said sagely with a wise nod. His head titled as he regarded her, yellow eyes questioning.

Once he let her go she pulled away and pawed at her soggy ear.
"Is that why you were so cranky the last time we met?" Evita joked, eyeing him playfully with one paw still on her ear. She paused and her smile vanished a bit. "No, I just... I had an unfortunate encounter this morning..." She spoke hesitantly, still unsure of herself. She sat and focused on her paws in the wet dirt. She wasn't sure why she was telling him any of this. She should have just put the silly encounter behind her and went on with her day and behaved normally. She wasn't sure why she couldn't feel at ease over this.

"No, I'm always cranky." he said matter-of-factly. His ears perked as she finally shared some of what was upsetting her. He felt his hackles rising and didn't quite know why. "Someone else was around here? What happened?" he questioned, now determined to find an answer. Even if he didn't have a specific 'territory' per se, he'd be around the same area long enough for him to consider it 'his space'. It rubbed him the wrong way that someone else would barge in and unsettle a wolf he saw as a friend.

Evita looked up at him uncertainly and slowly nodded as he spoke. She studied his actions for a moment before responding. "Ah... yes... They just... weren't very friendly... Set me off is all." She shifted her weight in an uncomfortable manner and her ears fell back.

A low growl rumbled in his chest. "They were aggressive?" he ground out, fighting back his temper. "Did they attack you? Where was this? When did it happen?" His growls were becoming snarls as his fur bristled around him and tail went rigid behind him. As if the interloper were still nearby he swung his head around, eyes scanning the misty treeline.

Evita was taken aback by his response, but something about her enjoyed his protectiveness and put her at ease. She nudged him with her paw, "It's alright, I think I can hold my own... They didn't attack me, no." She tried to reassure him. "I've been travelling all morning since the encounter so it happened no where near here." She studied him for a moment with a half smile. "You're pretty protective of your friends, huh?"

Rikki quit his snarling and turned back to Evita, momentarily startled out of his fit. "Well, yeah, of course. I don't want anything bad to happen to you." he said easily, confused by her remark. He took a step closer and snuffled at the fur on her neck, seeing if he could pick up any scent clue to the recent intruder. "If they ever show up again, just howl for me. I'll make them leave." his words turned dark as he looked above her head, scanning the area again with glaring eyes.

Evita tilted her head to the side and raised a brow at his darker tone. "This is an interesting side of you I have yet to see. What exactly are you gonna do?" She questioned with sincere curiosity, ears perking forward.

"Drive them out. By any means necessary" he said simply. "And if they refused, I'd kill them." His tone didn't match the gravity of his words. It sounded more like he was discussing the weather or the latest hunt. "I won't tolerate dangerous wolves."

Evita's eyes widened for a moment in shock. "Kill them? Goodness." She stood and shook some dirt out of her coat. She moved to leave, growing weary of the misty woods, but motioned with her head for him to come along with her as she continued speaking. "You don't think that's a bit excessive?"

Rikki happily trotted to her side and then kept pace. It was difficult at first because his legs were much longer but he adapted well enough. "Probably not." he replied after a moment of deliberation. Suddenly his eyes grew distant and his hackles rose. Slowly he bared his teeth until his face was contorted into a macabre grin. "I'll make sure I'm the most dangerous thing in these woods." he growled lowly, his words gargling in his throat. As fast as it had come, his face returned to it's normally placid stolidity. He gave a hearty shake, ending with a wag of his tail.

Evita looked over at him as if he were absolutely mad, mouth agape and brows rising. She wondered for a moment what she was getting herself into with this friendship but decided to shake off the thoughts. She looked forward again as he returned to a normal state and snorted with a laugh. "Alright, as your loyal subject I suppose I must stand behind you in your efforts, Oh Dangerous Mud One." She joked, but when she spoke again it was more serious. "I do have a question for you, though."

Rikki gave a bark of laughter and couldn't hold in his dramatic side. He pranced away with his head held high, extending and retracting his legs to their full length, letting his tail wave in the air. He circled back to stand before Evita and play bowed, grinning up at her toothily. As she became more serious she stood again and titled his head in curiosity, waiting for her question.

Evita watched his little show with a grin before putting on her serious face again. "I was just wondering..." She paused and squinted her eyes in thought, moving around him. She stopped a few paces away and turned to face him. "Where does that anger- that darkness- come from?" She hoped this question wouldn't drive him away. Sometimes questioning personal things about others did.

Rikki's entire body noticeably drooped at her question. He hunched his shoulder and lowered his head, whining softly. With small steps he followed after Evita submissivly, giving her pleading side ways glances. "I let my family down." he admitted sadly, the words nearly choking him. Once he was close enough he tried to make his body smaller than hers and reached his neck up from his crouched position to lick at her face imploringly. "I don't wanna talk about it yet." he nearly begged.

Evita looked down at him and frowned. She studied his face for a moment before replying. "Alright, let's go." She swiftly turned and kept going in the direction they had been heading, looking over her shoulder at him. He grew ever more curious to her by the moment but she wasn't about to press this topic.

Relieved he'd been let off the hook, Rikki was quick--if not graceful--in scrambling to his feet and leaping after her. It only took a few strides to catch up and he was matching her pace again. As a gesture of goodwill be bumped her with his hip as they went and let his tongue loll. "Do you actually know where we're going?" he asked doubtfully.

Evita grinned over at him as he bumped his hip into hers. At his question, an almost mischievous smile grew on her muzzle. "Oh yes. I do. But I won't tell you what it is." She responded coyly. "It's a surprise! I found this spot the other day... Not too far now." She suddenly jumped forward and broke out into a run. She looked back at him playfully with a wide grin before looking forward again.
It was just turning to sunset as she sensed they were nearing the location. The gray of the sky earlier was forgotten and taking its place were glorious shades of purple and pink. She stopped behind tall bushes that completely shrouded their view of what she was about to reveal to him. She was catching her breath as she turned to face him with an excited look on her face, tongue lolling. "Are you ready?"

With a devilish grin he opened his stride and gave chase. Of course he was careful to remain behind Evita, but not by too far. A guy can't give up all his pride. He slowed to a trot as she stopped in front of a wall of greenery. Rikki panted lightly as he lifted his head, nose and whiskers twitching as he scented the air. In answer to her question he whined loudly and pawed at the ground, digging small furrows in the earth with his claws.

Evita grinned with delight at his response. "Normally I would totally drag this out, but I have to admit I'm quite excited myself." She giggled and then cleared her throat. "Ahem. Without further ado..." She lifted her head high and pushed her way through the bushes, popping out on the other side with leaves and twigs sticking to her fur. She quickly shook them off before surveying the field before her. It was filled with beautiful wildflowers of all colors with lightning bugs blinking all through the air. As the sky darkened with each passing moment they grew even more visible and numerous. Evita was relieved to find lightning bugs still here as it was now the beginning of autumn. It would have been a bit disappointing to her if they weren't around. She felt it would have made the area less magical. Crickets were heard chirping in the grass and flowers and from the middle of the field she could hear frogs croaking around a small pond she knew to be there. She quickly turned back to Rikki, excitedly awaiting his reaction.

Rikki laughed and began forcing his way through the brush after her. He was snagged and pulled in every direction but eventually he made it through in--mostly--one piece. Before he could think to shake him self off he was struck dumb by the sight before him. Something churned in his chest as he watched the fire flies slowly drift through the field, illuminating the sea of wildflowers below. Chirping crickets played their soliloquies between swaying blades of grass. He didn't know how much time had passed--he just continued staring wide eyed and open mouthed.

Evita's smile softened and she felt proud of having found this place. She turned to stand beside him. "It's beautiful, isn't it?" She spoke softly, tail swaying gently behind her and eyes following the fireflies. She slowly stepped forward and into the field, the tall grass and flowers brushing up against her sides. Her eyes lit up as the fireflies danced around her to the sound of the crickets. The moon was becoming present in the sky and illuminating the field as she looked up and noted the stars that were beginning to emerge and twinkle in the night sky.

Rikki couldn't pull his gaze from field but nodded slowly to what Evita said. A fire fly lit up across his nose and it startled him into a sneeze. After shaking his head he turned to look back at the field...and was struck dumb again. Evita's fur glowed soft and warm in the fading sunlight and the fire flies dancing around made her look covered in stars. His jaw shut with an audible snap when he realized it had been hanging open. His ears pinned back as he suddenly felt awkward and shy. Swallowing the lump in his throat he waded out into the grass to stand by Evita. He lifted a paw and let it hang in the air, waiting. Eventually a fire fly lit upon it and stayed there for a moment, blinking in and out before fluttering away.

Evita looked at him as he entered the field with wide, excited eyes and a grin. She bounced forward gracefully through the flowers, snapping at the fireflies in her wake playfully, and made her way towards the center. In the center of the field was a small clearing that contained a single, short tree, a large rock, and a small circle pond. As she entered the clearing the frogs quickly hopped back into the pond. She walked up to it and sat down, staring down at her rippling reflection. Once the water settled it looked as though the fireflies were dancing among the stars in the reflection of the pond's dark waters.

Rikki grinned and bounded behind Evita, surprisingly light on his feet for a wolf his size. His teeth clicked together rhythmically with the crickets as he snapped after fire flies, not caring if he caught them or not, the chase was fun enough. A small yelp of surprise escaped him as his front paws splashed into the pond. He regarded his distorted reflection in surprise but his tail waved languidly behind him.

Evita was startled by his sudden splash into the pond but quickly began laughing. She stood and hopped on top of the large rock next to the pond. She was excited to find she was taller than him when she stood on it and she grinned proudly. "I can tell you love it here." She lay down on the rock and looked up at him. "But this place is a secret! Just you and I know. Don't go bringing any ladies here hoping to woooo them." She joked and lay on her side to stretch out her legs.

Rikki pawed at the water, trying to see more frogs, but they were all hiding in the mud. He laughed at what Evita said while he stretched languorously. His jaws nearly cracked from his wide yawn before he flopped down on the cool pond bank dirt next to Evita's rock. "Wouldn't work since you already know about this place." he said yawned back, fighting to stay awake a little longer, he hadn't even realized what he said.

Evita's head had been laying on the rock but it snapped up quickly when she realized what he had said. "Wh-" She started then eyed him for a moment, processing. "Oh haha, very funny." She stretched and got up, hopping down from the rock. It was a good spot for a nap but not a full night of sleep she had decided. She moved over near him, not too close, before throwing herself down on the ground with a "humph" and curling into a ball.

"Hrm?" was all Rikki managed to garble out in response to Evita. His eyes had already shut and he was rapidly falling deeper and deeper into somnolence. When Evita 'hmmphed' onto the ground near him he cracked an eye open only a slit and his mouth twitched. He closed both eyes and yawned again before curling tighter around himself, his face pointing to Evita.

She looked forward again as he returned to a normal state and snorted with a laugh. "Alright, as your loyal subject I suppose I must stand behind you in your efforts, Oh Dangerous Mud One." She joked, but when she spoke again it was more serious. "I do have a question for you, though."

Rikki gave a bark of laughter and couldn't hold in his dramatic side. He pranced away with his head held high, extending and retracting his legs to their full length, letting his tail wave in the air. He circled back to stand before Evita and play bowed, grinning up at her toothily. As she became more serious she stood again and titled his head in curiosity, waiting for her question.

Evita watched his little show with a grin before putting on her serious face again. "I was just wondering..." She paused and squinted her eyes in thought, moving around him. She stopped a few paces away and turned to face him. "Where does that anger- that darkness- come from?" She hoped this question wouldn't drive him away. Sometimes questioning personal things about others did.

Rikki's entire body noticeably drooped at her question. He hunched his shoulder and lowered his head, whining softly. With small steps he followed after Evita submissivly, giving her pleading side ways glances. "I let my family down." he admitted sadly, the words nearly choking him. Once he was close enough he tried to make his body smaller than hers and reached his neck up from his crouched position to lick at her face imploringly. "I don't wanna talk about it yet." he nearly begged.

Evita looked down at him and frowned. She studied his face for a moment before replying. "Alright, let's go." She swiftly turned and kept going in the direction they had been heading, looking over her shoulder at him. He grew ever more curious to her by the moment but she wasn't about to press this topic.

Relieved he'd been let off the hook, Rikki was quick--if not graceful--in scrambling to his feet and leaping after her. It only took a few strides to catch up and he was matching her pace again. As a gesture of goodwill be bumped her with his hip as they went and let his tongue loll. "Do you actually know where we're going?" he asked doubtfully.

Evita grinned over at him as he bumped his hip into hers. At his question, an almost mischievous smile grew on her muzzle. "Oh yes. I do. But I won't tell you what it is." She responded coyly. "It's a surprise! I found this spot the other day... Not too far now." She suddenly jumped forward and broke out into a run. She looked back at him playfully with a wide grin before looking forward again.
It was just turning to sunset as she sensed they were nearing the location. The gray of the sky earlier was forgotten and taking its place were glorious shades of purple and pink. She stopped behind tall bushes that completely shrouded their view of what she was about to reveal to him. She was catching her breath as she turned to face him with an excited look on her face, tongue lolling. "Are you ready?"

With a devilish grin he opened his stride and gave chase. Of course he was careful to remain behind Evita, but not by too far. A guy can't give up all his pride. He slowed to a trot as she stopped in front of a wall of greenery. Rikki panted lightly as he lifted his head, nose and whiskers twitching as he scented the air. In answer to her question he whined loudly and pawed at the ground, digging small furrows in the earth with his claws.

Evita grinned with delight at his response. "Normally I would totally drag this out, but I have to admit I'm quite excited myself." She giggled and then cleared her throat. "Ahem. Without further ado..." She lifted her head high and pushed her way through the bushes, popping out on the other side with leaves and twigs sticking to her fur. She quickly shook them off before surveying the field before her. It was filled with beautiful wildflowers of all colors with lightning bugs blinking all through the air. As the sky darkened with each passing moment they grew even more visible and numerous. Evita was relieved to find lightning bugs still here as it was now the beginning of autumn. It would have been a bit disappointing to her if they weren't around. She felt it would have made the area less magical. Crickets were heard chirping in the grass and flowers and from the middle of the field she could hear frogs croaking around a small pond she knew to be there. She quickly turned back to Rikki, excitedly awaiting his reaction.

Rikki laughed and began forcing his way through the brush after her. He was snagged and pulled in every direction but eventually he made it through in--mostly--one piece. Before he could think to shake him self off he was struck dumb by the sight before him. Something churned in his chest as he watched the fire flies slowly drift through the field, illuminating the sea of wildflowers below. Chirping crickets played their soliloquies between swaying blades of grass. He didn't know how much time had passed--he just continued staring wide eyed and open mouthed.

Evita's smile softened and she felt proud of having found this place. She turned to stand beside him. "It's beautiful, isn't it?" She spoke softly, tail swaying gently behind her and eyes following the fireflies. She slowly stepped forward and into the field, the tall grass and flowers brushing up against her sides. Her eyes lit up as the fireflies danced around her to the sound of the crickets. The moon was becoming present in the sky and illuminating the field as she looked up and noted the stars that were beginning to emerge and twinkle in the night sky.

Rikki couldn't pull his gaze from field but nodded slowly to what Evita said. A fire fly lit up across his nose and it startled him into a sneeze. After shaking his head he turned to look back at the field...and was struck dumb again. Evita's fur glowed soft and warm in the fading sunlight and the fire flies dancing around made her look covered in stars. His jaw shut with an audible snap when he realized it had been hanging open. His ears pinned back as he suddenly felt awkward and shy. Swallowing the lump in his throat he waded out into the grass to stand by Evita. He lifted a paw and let it hang in the air, waiting. Eventually a fire fly lit upon it and stayed there for a moment, blinking in and out before fluttering away.

Evita looked at him as he entered the field with wide, excited eyes and a grin. She bounced forward gracefully through the flowers, snapping at the fireflies in her wake playfully, and made her way towards the center. In the center of the field was a small clearing that contained a single, short tree, a large rock, and a small circle pond. As she entered the clearing the frogs quickly hopped back into the pond. She walked up to it and sat down, staring down at her rippling reflection. Once the water settled it looked as though the fireflies were dancing among the stars in the reflection of the pond's dark waters.

Rikki grinned and bounded behind Evita, surprisingly light on his feet for a wolf his size. His teeth clicked together rhythmically with the crickets as he snapped after fire flies, not caring if he caught them or not, the chase was fun enough. A small yelp of surprise escaped him as his front paws splashed into the pond. He regarded his distorted reflection in surprise but his tail waved languidly behind him.

Evita was startled by his sudden splash into the pond but quickly began laughing. She stood and hopped on top of the large rock next to the pond. She was excited to find she was taller than him when she stood on it and she grinned proudly. "I can tell you love it here." She lay down on the rock and looked up at him. "But this place is a secret! Just you and I know. Don't go bringing any ladies here hoping to woooo them." She joked and lay on her side to stretch out her legs.

Rikki pawed at the water, trying to see more frogs, but they were all hiding in the mud. He laughed at what Evita said while he stretched languorously. His jaws nearly cracked from his wide yawn before he flopped down on the cool pond bank dirt next to Evita's rock. "Wouldn't work since you already know about this place." he said yawned back, fighting to stay awake a little longer, he hadn't even realized what he said.

Evita's head had been laying on the rock but it snapped up quickly when she realized what he had said. "Wh-" She started then eyed him for a moment, processing. "Oh haha, very funny." She stretched and got up, hopping down from the rock. It was a good spot for a nap but not a full night of sleep she had decided. She moved over near him, not too close, before throwing herself down on the ground with a "humph" and curling into a ball.

"Hrm?" was all Rikki managed to garble out in response to Evita. His eyes had already shut and he was rapidly falling deeper and deeper into somnolence. When Evita 'hmmphed' onto the ground near him he cracked an eye open only a slit and his mouth twitched. He closed both eyes and yawned again before curling tighter around himself, his face pointing to Evita.
