Rikki limped quickly back to the den, a limp rabbit hanging from his jaws. Normally he could walk without a problem but the exertion of the hunt had flared pain throughout his leg and now he had to favor it. Annoying. But still his pushed and hurried along. Since the girls had left he hated leaving Evita alone, even if it was only for a hunt. They both missed their daughters terribly and the pain of their leaving still felt fresh, even months later. Rikki hoped a nice fresh rabbit would help.

Coming around a bend he slowed as he came into view of the small den. The den where his daughters were born. He sighed and trudged along, stopping at the entrance. He placed the rabbit down gingerly and peered inside for his mate.

"Evita?" he asked, wondering if she'd maybe gone somewhere.

Evita was hiding behind a nearby tree, awaiting her mate's return from his hunt. She was in a bit of a playful mood today. Ever since their daughters had left she had been trying to keep herself busy so she didn't have to constantly be thinking of them and if they were okay and why they hadn't visited yet. She heard trudging footsteps. Rikki was approaching. He called her name, his tone wondering.

Out she sprang from behind the tree. "I'm here!" She exclaimed, springing up to him in the snow and greeting him with a loving nuzzle. She looked down at his fresh kill. "Mmm, rabbit?" She licked his cheek gratefully. Glancing to his side, she noticed he was favoring one of his legs. "Rikki! Did you make it worse?" Her eyes grew concerned and her ears fell back. "Please let me do the hunting from now on."

Rikki almost jumped when Evita surprised him. His hackles were raised and his tail fluffed as he turned to greet his mate with a nuzzle, embarrassed he'd been taken so easily. And then the chiding began. He sighed and grumbled, limping to the opening of the den and lying down with a grateful huff.

"It's nothing, really." he tried to convince her. "I can hunt just fine." he added with a grumble, lying his head down on his paws. "It's just a little sore. I'll be fine." he looked up at her with big yellow eyes and wagged his tail.

"You walk like an old man." Evita replied dully with disbelieving eyes as she had just watched him limp and stiffly lie down at the mouth of the den. She shook her head and picked up the rabbit, padding over to him and laying down across from him with it. "Next time, I'm doing the hunting."

With the rabbit gripped between her paws, she began to tear into it and wasn't working long before she let out a short chuckle. "Remember the first day we met?" She glanced up at him.

Rikki huffed in annoyance and rolled his eyes. "I move just fine..." he grumbled under his breath as his mate moved across from him.

The pain in his leg was nothing but a dull throb now that he was resting. It wasn't that he didn't trust Evita's hunting but he didn't want her risking herself when he was perfectly fine. But right now he didn't want to have an argument so he let the issue slide.

He gave a short bark of laughter at Evita's remark. "Of course I remember. I gallantly gave you my rabbit." he reminisced with a bow of his head.

Evita ignored his grumblings, tossing him a chunk of rabbit that she had torn off.

She glanced back up at him again, a smile growing on her muzzle. "My prince charming." She teased, chewing on some meat. As much as she enjoyed having alone time again with Rikki, she did still miss their daughters. "I miss the girls." She was musing aloud, knowing full well that Rikki felt exactly the same way, if not missing them even more. He took their leaving pretty hard.

Rikki accepted the tossed meat and snapped it up quickly, licking his jowls with satisfaction. "'Prince Charming', huh?" he laughed at the expression.

At Evita's mention of the girls, Rikki felt himself deflate. He felt older and his leg ached more intensely. With a sigh he laid his head down on his paws and looked up at Evita sadly. "I know. I miss them too." he said softly, trying not to let too much emotion into his voice. "I hope they're eating enough."

Evita couldn't help but to laugh. "That's what you're worried about?" Of all the things for him to worry over with the girls out on their own, he was concerned whether or not they were eating enough. She shook her head with a smile, ripping some more meat from the rabbit. "What do you s'pose they're up to?" She glanced up at him curiously.

"Those two? Probably adventuring in some bear infested mountain." Rikki groaned at the though, covering his eyes with a large paw. The thought of those two off on one of their grand 'adventures' was enough to send his heart racing.

His leg stiffened uncomfortably underneath him and he stood with a rumble of unhappiness, turning in a circle and laying down on his other side. He licked at his bad leg, forgetting about Evita's watchful gaze. "I just want them to be safe and happy." he continued after a moment with a sigh, flopping over in the dirt.

Evita smiled at the thought of them on one of their grand adventures, although Rikki calling it bear-infested did send her heart momentarily a-flutter with nerves. "They're all hibernating." She said with a shake of her head, mostly to calm herself than him.

"Me too..." She looked up from the rabbit just in time to see him tending to his hind leg and she narrowed her eyes in on it before her brows furrowed with worry. "Speaking of safe and happy," Her tone grew tentative and she tilted her head away from him, nervous to meet his gaze. This topic had been plaguing her mind for a while now. "I mean, I know we're happy so I've mostly been thinking about safety. Do you ever think about it?" She cleared her throat, knowing she had to get to the point before her rambling confused Rikki. "Of course you do. What I mean to say is I've been thinking lately... that maybe... we should consider joining a pack." She glanced back to him with nervous yet curious eyes.

Rikki looked up at Evita when her tone grew tentative. His gaze narrowed on her as he grew suspicious. Whenever she adopted that tone of voice it was usually bad news. His eyes widened in shock when she finally got to the point. Them? Join a pack?

"Why do you think we need a pack?" he parked, fur standing on end. "We get by just fine by ourselves! Why would we join a pack?"

"It's just-" Evita drew her head away from her, glancing around as she grasped for something to say. "It's just safer, y'know, with your leg." She grew silent and lowered her head with her ears back, looking up at him. "What if we were to be attacked? We wouldn't stand a chance." She huffed, pushing the rabbit away from herself with her nose. "It was just an idea anyway." Her eyes narrowed and she rested her head on her paws, looking away from him as she was clearly pouting.

Rikki growled at the mention of his leg. "My leg is fine. I could protect us if anything happened." he glowered, clearly upset. His mate didn't think he could protect her. His ears flattened against his head and he growled again at himself. But seeing Evita pouting took the fight out of him and he sighed, fur flattening back out against his body.

With a little trouble he stood and moved to be beside Evita, laying down against her and resting his head on her neck. "I'll think about it..." he muttered hesitantly.

Evita instantly perked when he showed a sign of relenting. With a victorious giggle she rolled onto her back, licking at his cheek and neck in victory. "It won't be as bad as you think, I promise." She knew Rikki had never lived in a pack so this would really be a big change for him, but knowing that they would have the protection of other wolves on their side really made it worth it for her. She wouldn't just settle for any pack either. It had to be the right fit for both of them.
