”How’re you feeling, Prim?” Coachella asked the filly.Primrose sniffled miserably and curled up tighter where she lay in the sand. Coachella sighed and wandered closer to the waterfall, letting the mist spray into her mane and face. It was quite refreshing.
The small herd had been on it’s way to a new area when Primrose suddenly came down with a cold. They’d made a detour to a nearby oasis that featured a gorgeous waterfall. Primrose had plopped herself down in the warm sand as soon as they arrived while Howl and Saguaro patrolled the area for any other animals. Coachella closed her eyes and just enjoyed the cool spray from the falls, a smile on her face.
”Hey, Coachella! We found someone.” Howl called as he came trotting around the corner with Saguaro and a strange mare.
The mare was...interesting in appearance. She was black as pitch but covered in small, white spots all over her body. And the area around her eyes and muzzle were also spattered with white. She was...unusual.
”Hello.” Coachella said by way of greeting to the mare. ”Are you on your own?”
The mare was silent for a moment before nodding shortly and glancing away. Coachella waited for her to elaborate, but apparently she wasn’t going to. Howl awkwardly shuffled next to the mare as Saguaro walked over to the water.
”Yeah, so uh, she was just hanging out by herself over there, so I figured I’d invite her over.” Howl said with a high laugh. ”By the way, what’s your name?”
The mare again was silent and finally sighed before muttering something neither of the other horses could hear. Howl titled his head in confusion and said, ”Sorry, what is it?”
The mare sighed again, visibly uncomfortable now, and said, audibly this time, ”Jaci.”
”Well Jaci, we’re happy to have you with us!” Howl exclaimed happily, nudging the black mare with his shoulder.
Jaci shied away from the physical contact and mumbled something that could have been a “thank you”. Howl, finally feeling too awkward, shuffled away, making some excuse to go check on Primrose. Coachella glared at him as he left. Now she was alone with Peyote.
”Sooo...where are you from?” Coachella asked.
”You don’t have to.” mumbled Jaci.
”I’m sorry? Do what?” asked Coachella, brows knitting together in confusion.
”Talk to me.” Jaci clarified, finally looking Coachella in the eyes.
”Ok...well, I’m talking to you because I want to.” Coachella said slowly, clearly perplexed.
Jaci’s eyes narrowed in obvious suspicion. ”Don’t you know anything about black coated horses?” she snapped, ears pinning back. ”We’re bad luck. Not to be trusted.”
Coachella rolled her eyes and huffed. ”Is THAT what this is about? That stupid stereotype? Please. Nobody believes that crap.” she said dismissively.
Jaci’s glare hardened. ”Plenty of horses believe it.” she deadpanned.
Coachella’s ears fell flat as she realized her mistake. ”Oh...I’m sorry...is...is that why you’re alone?”
Jaci nodded stiffly.
Coachella straightened up. ”Well. I still think it’s all crap, and I promise Howl does, too. You’re welcome to come along with us when we move on if you’d like. We’d be happy to have you.”
Jaci’s ears perked forward and she looked genuinely shocked. After a moment she looked away and said softly, ”Th-thank you. I’ll uh...I’ll think about it.”
