These guys are native to Mexico and the southwestern United States. They're a little out of their element in Illinois, but something tells me that most folks who visit the zoo can't discern gray wolf subspecies.Something about how they're called "foxes" on a near-daily basis...
I just did a Google image search for Mexican wolves, and it came up with some European subspecies, some red wolves, and a few Canadian subspecies. Plus a coyote.

Yes, mixing wolf and foxes is very odd. Peole is strange sometime....

It was very cold that day, but for some reason, the wolves seemed pretty excited. I got there well after opening time and they were still trotting around as if they were about to be fed!

Ostriches is a funny word for me because is very similar to the italian word "ostriche", that are oysters in english....
Maybe wolves don't care for cold, because in their habitat it's cold in winter.

They originally lived in deserts and on mountains, so the snow probably isn't an issue for them. We just got about 2 feet of snow here last week, so I'm curious as to how the wolves reacted to all of it

Nearly every time I go to the zoo, I hear someone mix up the species names. A whole group once declared the African wild dogs to be hyenas, but the wolf/fox confusion was probably one of the oddest I've encountered.
The "MEXICAN GRAY WOLF" sign was right in front of her too!
