I personally think that this piece is great.
The drab colours of the background contrast especially well with Raya and her outfit (dat flower). The fact that she and her outfit incorporate a few desert colours exaggerates this effect. I also quite like the fact that you have made the colour of her arm under the sheer armband-thing different to the view of the desert behind it. My only niggles are that I think that the green cacti draw too much attention (note, green is one of the colours that stand out most in a desert environment) and that I think the flower would have been nicer green to not contrast the eyes. I also wonder why the earrings incorporate red as opposed to purple like the rest of her outfit.
The line in this drawing is brilliant and I personally like the slight painterly feel that it has. it is always clear and crisp and is so professional compared to your earliest drawings. But, um, Raya has something under her bikini bottom that looks like it doesn't belong....
The shading is well done and shows a sense of vastness that is prevalent in the desert. I also love the attention to detail shown in the shadow the chains cast on Raya.
The background is great and I understand it's a new thing to you (as someone who paints regularly, I suggest that you turn the canvas/page/sheet upside down and lift the brush up towards the end of the stroke. This will give you a taper in the palm tree trunks and branches).
I can see a few effects in this piece and they are all well used. The blur (you like using that, don't you?) is perfect and I like the glints on the shiny things (but the one on her right cuff seems different and I'm unsure where the light source for it is) I love the Loreal glint on her hair (because it's worth it). However, tears are bigger as they need to be to get out of the eye. They would be about the size of the pollen thingies on the flower, but a half globe.
Overall a great artwork that shows amazing skill. Definitely one of your greats.

I am truly lazy when it comes to backgrounds so I use a blurry quick paint job so I can get back to the good stuff, and I like how it makes the real focus of the characters pop out for sure.Β I didnt realize the lighting was bad on her cuff, oops! Thanks for the in depth critique!

The overal technique is nice, the clothing is very well rendered, her expression is vivid and the background is just enough as it is ^^ (maybe the palmtrees are a bit too thick ?). The light is, I think, not brigh enough, and it lacks a little bit of shadows (like you did on your other drawing "Pleasantries", where the intensity of the sun was well incorporated in the drawing) ; the emphasis here is more on Raya and her slavey, but the misery of this journey in the desert adds a lot to it.
I wish the picture could've shown her whole body, because I didn't realise immediatly that she was walking (or had been). Seeing her legs in her walking pace would've been a nice touch, and sand and dirt on her feet (with or without shoes) might have amplified her plight. But in the same time, this framing is quite righte too, it focuses on what's important, and that's her face.
I put it as a favorite, and as a matter of fact, even put it as a wallpaper for some time ^^

I think that the collar chain would block her hands from reaching properly, as the chain between them would intersect before she could reach the back (I'm assuming it's reasonably tight). And if she tried pulling them around the side, they would not be coordinated enough to do anything. Yes, I am an engineer. A kinky engineer.Β

She murmured to herself. nervous... but then the doors broke open. she rushed to take her twin hammers. and fought. but soon they were too many. they tore apart her dress. and made her wear the adeshian (Place that I've been inspired by. credit to Rinmaru Γ ) dancer suit. and then they gagged her with a handkerchief and chained her. forcing her out to the desert. she cried while walking there. "P-PLEASE! I don't want to be a slave!" she yelled through the gag. but all they did was to laugh... [/story]
