Description Normally I use the British variant of words but deviantart has a limit to the name of uploads so this title is in the American English preferred spelling. Anyway, let's talk about why we're here. Deviantart is releasing a new badge that deviants get for watching a video and then demonstrating they understand the three principles of composition demonstrated in said video by producing an image of their own or copying the artist in the video. As you can see, I went with the former of the two options to earn a badge. Don't get me wrong, I respect Simone's work as it is well drawn, but I don't care for just copying him.

So, the first principle I had to make use of was the Rule of Thirds, which basically required that I divide the image into thirds both horizontally and vertically. It helps with diverse concepts if I incorporate three of them so the rule of thirds can create structure in an image with more than just visuals. For the rule of thirds I struggled because I needed to take a picture that naturally creates that rule of thirds effect since I use real pictures as backgrounds so often. I found a tree some time back that up close did create a natural rule of three effect in the image. That helped me but the lighting really benefited from it.

The second principle is Cohesion & Harmony. That, I think can be applied to to my previous use of lighting and shading. I wanted to have these characters, my OC Maria hanging out with Gir from the work of art show, Invader Zim. I had to work extra hard to make their shadows blend with the shadows from the tree as well as the angles I used to define their shading. That I feel like I could have improved by not keeping Gir in the same style used by Jhonen Vasquez. I know I made a big deal regarding not copying someone's work but Jhonen Vasquez has literally been an inspiration since I was a kid and I feel like it would disrespect him trying to change Gir. Can't fix perfection. That being said, my placement of the characters created cohesion since they almost look like they could be there, dancing like fools around the tree. I feel like there's a contrast with the foreground and the background due to the way the characters are drawn but I'm hoping the peaceful mood of the image deals with it so that people still feel a feeling of harmony emanating from it. I feel like this would be that lack of strict adherence to the rules.

The third is Color Theory, which I think is this image's saving grace. Green was the primary colour of the original image, It didn't dominate the image but everywhere you looked you could see some green. This would work well with including Gir since he is green as well, although because he is such a brighter shade of green he kinda draws the eye to him. I can live with that quality. I tried to make the most use of complementary colours here although I feel like I could have done better.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In case anyone is wondering, yes, I would totally ship Maria with Gir. They both are kinda stupid but they mean well.

All bio-organic characters are over 18 and nothing sexual is visibly obvious in this picture, they are not even nude.
