So, in the case that there's magic in this scenario, I have one idea:

A use of an ice or water spell to keep the barrel cool!

That's a good idea-but they'd have to be careful. Wouldn't want components to jam at just the wrong moment (as metal expands when it gets colder)

Yeah, it would have to be a slight spell. Better yet, if the gun has a water jacket, use a water spell to fill the barrel, then a slight ice spell to keep it from evaporating as quickly.

Thanks for the comment Yes-the design is a bit clunky.An early 20th century asthetic with a bit of extra armour thrown in.
