Looks useful. Thanks. I Can get the basic idea. I'm in trouble to find out how to draw digitally, and I was looking for this style. I have just a bamboo yet, but that's good enough to learn yet.
Thanks again

This tutorial is really helpful. I'm a left handed drawer, but right handed mouser, so I need all the help I can get with drawing lol...
Can't wait until I can afford a Wacom tablet, this whole ambidextrous design thing is driving me crazy!

Oh yuss, I'd like some answers on technique! What did you use to smooth?Mostly, though...is there a way I can get your brush library off of you? I can never get the right brushes going for speed painting.

a) your brush looks weird (but cool)

b) your not doing this with a mouse are you : P

c) the transition from the lines overlay to the clean highlights really baffles me : S - particularily with the gun and visor... how do you go from rough and sketchy to smooth, clean parts and peices

d) how do you get the crisp reflections and highlights, e.g. on the shoulder of the gun? do you select that block and paint it individually?

e) how many layers did you end up using for each step / in total

f) it looks awsome.

Hi Holyrebelion

The blocking in brush is a normal airbrush tightened up to an elipse, I then angle it around 45 degrees

no I used a wacom intous 3 - a4 pad - a mouse would drive me mad

the lines overlay is just for checking im putting light and shade in the right places - I turn it off when Im done. The smoothness is a large softer airbrush used in the really dark areas and the really light areas - it generally helps blend in the rougher patches but still leaving a hint of texture behind.

For the gun highlights I paint within carefully selected areas - I often use paths for hard components, and it keeps good edge control

I think I used around ten layers in total - it gives me flexibily to go back and change things I dont like

Cheers

Actually Im a professional car designer - so this is a departure from my normal work. But I do get to draw every day for a living.

wow... thats my dream job, car design : P (then again it probably is for every other budding industrial designer). How does one get into the industry? Do you perhaps have some drawings and sketches of cars youve designed in the past that you can share? What car companies did / do you work for?

(i ask too many questions, i know... )

I got into the industry by doing a transport deisgn degree, but I started out studying product design.
Soon I will have a render tutorial up on [link] so you'll be able to see mine and various other car desingers works.
Also Imight put up some auto work here at some point - but alot of it is confidental.

I have worked for Johnson controls german(inetriors seating), Design Q (consultancy) projects such as Princess yachts, mg, kia. Im currenlty working with a Japanese consultancy so we regualry produce work for Mazda and Toyota group, but over the last few years I have been regulary contracted out to Nissan Design Europe working one production exteriors and concept cars.

thats amazing! how does one manage to land these jobs and contracts? do you contact these companies yourself, or do you go through an independent agency?

I'm just wondering what the timeframe is of making something like this. I've seen speed paintings done somewhere in the realm of 45 to 60 minutes, but I've also known some people who can bang out what they call a "speed painting" in eight hours. Lookin really good, though. Those clean highlights really do bring the piece together quite elegantly.

Spacetoy In reply to vest [2006-05-16 18:46:16 +0000 UTC]

basically the whole image from the sketch to the final took under the hour, but with this one I couldn't help coming back and tweaking colour and contrast, adding a touch more highlight etc. So It was actually finished in a 3 hour period in amogst doing other things.

It might be of interest for people to know that I set up the f keys to instantly create layers of different types to speed up my work flow.
