Description
New painting! This was started last year and finished sometime after Thanksgiving. I had been doing some graphic design stuff at work that was extremely tedious, and I was itching to do something really challenging and complex. Also something with all the colors.
As you might imagine, though, this was a monster to scan (the original is about 18 x 28") and I didn't tackle that until today. Even then, it required significant work in Photoshop to make it look right.
This is my second or third attempt at painting the Milky Way in traditional materials. I still don't think I've got it quite right, so this is a theme I will probably return to in the future. Still, I'm very pleased with it overall.

Thanks! It's something I want to experiment with more in the future, too.

I love this. Clockwork in the sky is a strange obsession of mine. I regret not trying to draw it more often. This is a really lovely painting, awesome work!

Thank you! I may try something similar in the future, as I'm not sure I achieved the Milky Way effect I wanted. The Milky Way is really quite difficult to paint/draw!

This is gorgeous It's like something I'd expect to see on the cover of a fantasy novel or something! I have yet to dare attempting starscapes traditionally, how did you do the stars? Did you do them all individually?

Yeah, the stars are all individual. Once the colors of the painting for the sky part were 'final' (watercolor washes first, then colored pencil for blending) I took my Bleed-Proof White and a paintbrush and just made little dabs of paint for the stars. The trick with stars is getting them to look random enough. I try to do dabs in little groups of 2-5 stars in varying sizes, keeping an eye on the overall space to make sure it doesn't look too cluttered or too sparse.

Thank you! I was going for a sort of glass-transparency effect, which I don't quite think I captured (that sort of thing is much easier to do digitally) but I enjoyed the attempt.
