Description this week's submission...

Topic: you will design a suit for the working woman. This is about design being comfortable yet being upscale and stylish

Description:

first of all, i love suits, so i was excited about this challenge and getting the opportunity to make it more fun, so i chose to do one for a more creative career, like arts, music, that kind of thing (ie, not financial services like i'm in...)

i decided to use a cropped jacket, because i LOVE them...mine has a collar that stands up (kinda what you'd see on a motorcycle jacket...) and fits close to the body, except for the sleeves, which are wide and 1/2 length. the ribbon detailing ends in the back with a notch cutout and bow detail, and the jacket buttons up off centered with tannish buttons. The jacket is lined with a light blue silk, the same color as is in the plaid.

The pants follow suit (har har, sorry for the pun) and are fitted nicely through the hip & thigh and then get wider, flowing away from the body. very roomy and comfortable (i know, i have a pair of wide leg trousers, and i never want to take them off when i get home, except they're linen, so they always look like a wrinkled mess when i get done with work...but i digress). The pants are trimmed with a satin ribbon (the same as the jacket) on the cuff. Both the pants and jacket are made from a lightweight wool, so it's versatile for wear throughout fall and winter, and maybe even into spring, since the colors are light enough.

Under the jacket, i decided to stick to more classic items, including a white cotton cap sleeve button front shirt with mother of pearl-like buttons, and a fine gauge knit (so it's not chunky underneath the jacket) sweater vest, with a satin ribbon trim. brown leather pumps and a big brown leather tote bad complete the look.

i enjoyed making this, even if making my own plaid was a bit tedious. i would totally wear a suit like this. I think i accomplished making the suit less stuffy but still retaining its classic appeal that has made it a staple to a working woman's wardrobe for many years.

oh! ok. what *i* do personally is make a small section of the pattern, then i just copy and paste, trying to line it up as best as i can. sometimes you have to flip it vertically of horizontally though. i think this suit had like 30 layers or something per figure. just for the darn pattern!
i'm sure there's a quicker way, but i only have painter essentials 2, so not a lot of options are available to me.

What a stunning design, and that's not usually something you can say about suits. I think you've hit the right balance between femininity and professionalism. The beige-y colour is usually a real turn off for me in a suit but I think the blue in the ribbon detail and shirt really make it eye-catching. And I love that you've added the detail to the turnup on the trousers, trousers can really be ignored sometimes in a suit and that is a real dissapointment but you've done them well. Congratulations.

VERY nice, and hits a perfect balance between trendy cropped jacket and that gorgeous color on the sweater vest, and the beautiful, classic simplicity of a nice, slimming pair of pants!

Completely chic, and my favorite thing in your gallery. Great job, I could definitely see this pret-a-porter at

Very well done. The plaid was well worth it. I think there are some modern elements to this and it still remains traditional to the corporate wear. Great colors, this is very fresh and attractive, balanced with that great navy. I like!

So lovely!!! It's very classic but the navy definately makes the whole suit just pop!!

And I LOVE the plaid, well done rendering that! I like that it's so softly colored! The trims are lovely and the addition of the oversized brown leather tote definately completes the look!

sparklefly In reply to catzilla [2006-08-16 02:55:37 +0000 UTC]

that plaid killed me. but it was easier to render than that damn gingham from the hillbilly one.

i'm actually very happy with how it turned out. i love this suit. i want this suit. and that bag.

Yeah, you were crazy with that gingham *_*

the funny thing is, after that challenge, i went shopping and in forever 21, they had a ton of gingham printed items. i felt like i was experiencing a flashback from a bad acid trip. if i ever see gingham again....
