Description
At last, I finished my Sailor Fuku tutorial! My Sailor Moon costumes get the most questions by far, and I've been meaning to put together this tutorial foreverrrrr to answer everyone's questions ~ I hope it helps out a few aspiring senshi cosplayers out there <3!This is my first tutorial, but if it goes over well I might put together more so let me know if there's anything else you'd like to see from me!
Click download to view the complete tutorial in pdf form, or you can download it directly from my website .
I hope you enjoy, feel free to comment or message me with further questions!
Edit: I noticed the new PDF reader on DA is a little wonky ... I did update the fonts in the pdf so they look a little nicer than they did before, but this pdf looks best if you download it and read it in adobe reader/acrobat.

I'm going to make my Super Sailor Venus costume and I think the Sailor Moon Pattern and the Figure Skating pattern would work for itΒ

How long does it usually take to make? I want to do it for an upcoming con, but I'm already doing Mami Tomoe, so I'm not sure.

I made a Sailor Mars costume with this tutorial not too long ago and loved it! However, I did have trouble with the breast plate. I wanted to make it nice and fitted but it ended up being too tight. I added more fabric to the back but then it was too loose so I ended up pinning it in the back. I'm still kind of new to sewing. Any suggestions?

Thank you so much for providing this amazing tutorial!! It has been invaluable in helping me get started with my Sailor Mars cosplay.Β
I just had a question, and this is mostly for my own curiosity. When pleating the skirt, why do the pleats need to be different lengths at the top and bottom? Is there a specific reason they are not just straight pleats? Again, thank you so much for taking the time to do this!!

I know this is waayy late to reply on, but I am also working on my Sailor Mars atm and wondered the same thing, so I figure I could answer this in case other people wanted to know, since you've probably already finished yours by now haha.
I believe the pleats being diagonal helps it flare out at the bottom more. The parts you pinch together at the top are the 3" ones while it only pinches 2" ones at the bottom, so it shrinks the waist and leaves more room on the bottom. Hope that helps!

How did you attach the clear plastic ornament to the bow?Β
Like.. if you paint the inside, what would you use for backing?
π: 0 β©: 1
SkyeAnnabellaLeeRay In reply to xKaiBu [2015-06-16 03:47:46 +0000 UTC]
For the backing, you could use a glue on pin-backing for it! Just make sure to put it near the top, and not the middle. Putting the pin-backing in the middle makes the brooch drag down and makes the bow droop down.Β

This tutorial is amazing. Β I did notice you said you put snaps into the crotch of the bodysuit. Β I'm assuming that means this is an over the head outfit? Β I know the pattern says to seam it up but with the addition of the skirt and making the back of the neck higher I guess it might not pull over the hips quite so easily. Β I just wanted to clarify before I made a mistake.

Yes, that's what they meant. An alternative would be sewing it, and putting a zipper in the back. :0

This tutorial is amazing. I'm using it for my Sailor Jupiter cosplay. Thank you so much! But I still have a few questions,
By how many inches did you alter the top pattern?
And how far in did you go exactly for the collar?
Again thank you so much. I have been wanting to cosplay for a long time and this tutorial is a lifesaver.

This was so helpful when I made my first Sailor Pluto cosplay! Thank you so much for making this!Β I'm going to end up redoing it now that I have learned a lot more and am more confident in my skills haha but I did have a couple questions regarding the skirt.Β I wanted to ask what exactly a "Pocket-Styled hem" is and if you have a tutorial you suggest.Β Does this type of hem have anything to do with lining? I don't see when exactly you add in the lining and flip it if that is the way you do it
I look forward to more tutorials that you come out with in the future!

MalteseLizzieMcGee [2014-08-21 12:31:28 +0000 UTC]
Do you sew the outer skirt to the lining, then turn it inside out and iron it? Or are the lining and outer skirt only attached at the top?
You also mention a "pocket style hem". What does this mean?

is the reason the pleats are slanted like that (ie. 2'' on top 3'' on bottom) because its eventually cut into the V shape? i am going to be making the skirt for lucy heartfilia from fairy tail and just adding a waist band to the top instead of the bodysuit. will it make a difference? i really like your tutorial as it is easier to follow than others i have seen... please respond asap, i am about to start marking my pleats! haha

I use this exact same pleating method for "normal" pleated skirts all the time!! The difference at the top and bottom is so the pleats flare out at the bottom, so the waist part of the skirt is more narrow than the part that covers your butt.
If you want to see what a "normal" skirt using this method looks like, I also used this pattern for my Love Live skirt tutorial! sparklepipsi.deviantart.com/arβ¦

OMG I love this tutorial. But would you happen to make one with adjusted measurements for a cosplay for an 8 month old? I'm going to Supercon this July as Sailor Moon and my daughter as Chibi Moon and her father is going to be tuxedo mask. But I don't know how to reduce these measurements for her.
π: 0 β©: 1
SkyeAnnabellaLeeRay In reply to beegee5192 [2015-06-16 03:53:26 +0000 UTC]
I recommend measuring her torso (shoulders, bust, waist, and hips) out, and maybe buying a dance leotard in her size instead of making one from scratch. The only part you'd have to make from scratch for the leotard itself is the breastplate. But if you'd still prefer the pattern, I'd measure her (s/b/w/h) and adjust the pattern accordingly, or pin the pattern all together (or transferring the pattern to a different/stiffer material, like felt or muslin) on her, and mark where things should be taken in and such. :0

What kind of poplin did you use? Was it a poly/cotton blend, or 100% polyester?

SparklePipsi In reply to sunnystars [2014-01-18 19:59:24 +0000 UTC]
tbh... I'm not sure ;w; I buy mine in the LA fashion district where nothing is labeled, lol ~ if I had to guess, I'd say 100% polyester cuz the stuff I use doesn't wrinkle AT ALL. A poly-cotton blend would still work though ~ even a nice satin would work..! I just like the matte look for the original senshi fuku, personally.

Hey there~! I broke this down in an earlier comment but here's a little copy-pasta for ya :3
For the basic materials covered in this tutorial, it'll probably run you between between $35-50 in fabric costs, plus the skating pattern ... let's break this down to get a ballpark idea:
Poplin - $13.50 (4.5yards)
Lycra - $15 (1.5 yard)
Decorbond Interfacing - $2.50 (.5 yard)
Fleece - $4 (.5 yard)
Batting / Stuffing - $10 (for a bag)
Ribbon - $3 (spool)
Total = $48
If you need a copy of the skating pattern that could range from $5 - 15 dollars too ~
These are based on prices of stuff in my local area, so it could vary ... plus coupons can help a lot!! Especially at places like Joann's Fabrics ... I always say if you go in without a coupon, you're doing it wrong xD;; They expect coupon-clipping grandmas to be buying all their things so they overprice on purpose. Hunt down coupons online and BEAT THE SYSTEM.Β
If you're planning on buying shoes and/or a wig that can add to the price too, so keep that in mind as well~!
I hope that helps <3!

This is probably really dumb but I am trying to cut the already pleated skirt to be my size so I can sew the seam but every time I hold it up to myself, it all kind of unpleats so I am worried it's just going to end up the wrong size. Β Do you have any pro tips? I've tried a couple different things but I'm still so nervous it wont fit D:

I actually ended up doing this and it helped!
Oh gosh well I finished it and it was fine except I did a pretty sad job attaching it all together so I kept feeling like it would fall apart through Comic Con and have been too sick of looking at it to attempt to do a better job since then.
By the way, how did you end up attaching things with the velcro? Β I guess I should use a machine for that. Β It's just gross bc the kind I bought has the adhesive on it. :/
π: 0 β©: 1
SparklePipsi In reply to Clemmie [2013-11-03 20:12:34 +0000 UTC]
Yay grats on finishing your costume~!! <3Β For the bows I actually did just use heavy-duty adhesive velcro ... xD;; That stuff is pretty intense and doesn't go anywhere. Technically it would probably be better to sew it on, but it's worked for me!! For my Eternal Venus fuku I used pin backs and that worked nicely too ^^
